Square Trunked Palm Trees Grow at Fairchild Garden
Have you ever seen a palm with a square trunk? When we think of palms our minds' eye pictures a cylindrical trunk such as is seen in the Coconut, Royal, Date, Palmetto and the other commonly planted and native palms that thrive in South Florida. A handsome, medium sized palm that appears to be very suitable for patio and small yard plantings is Glaziova treubiana Beccari which to all apparent purposes can be described as having a square trunk. This square trunk phenomena is due to the arrangement of the palm leaves which are uniformly arranged in four perpendicular rows. The leaf bases remain attached to the palm trunk after the leaves die thus giving the palm trunk its square appearance. There are several specimens of this palm growing in the Montgomery Palmetum at the Fairchild Tropical Garden in Coral Gables. One mature specimen of Glaziova treubiana can be seen in flower there at the present time.

His suggestion won a company prize previously, making him eligible for the semi-annual grand prizes now announced. Florida Power and Light Company's employe suggestion contest, Fuller pointed out, is in constant operation. Winners are named each month. Employes are encouraged to express their ideas on all phases of operations, particularly customer service and improvement of employe working conditions. During 1946 company employes turned in a total of 372 suggestions. The average this year shows an increase with 194 suggestions turned in during the first six months.
