CORAL GABLES COUNTRY CLUBBER
By GORDON TAYLOR Our masters of the drafting boards, Ed Rempe, Bill Merriam and Herb Johnson got together Thursday night and arrived at a plan for the permanent display of the Club trophies. "Conspicuous, yet elegant," they say. Ed, as chairman, will get that plan for Frank Howard early in September. A pat on the shoulders to these busy fellows. Super saleswoman, Pat Hodge, has already started the sales of tickets for "Meet the Wife." Frances Embry and Pat are cooking up easy ways of getting ducats in your slacks. They know, of course, that vacation time will be over when this swell play opens on September 2nd (Tuesday), and closes September 5th (Friday), so make sure your comprehensive policies include "side-splitting." New Actors The cast for Meet the Wife has three new members hitherto unknown to our theatre followers as actors. Ted Hodge, Neeva Archer and Muirel Marshall intend to show how the show should be done. Their supporters, Walter Ashby, Edison Archer, Roff Elliott and Don Leigh have gone from bit roles to feature stuff, so with all these stars we cannot help but twinkle, twinkle. Sir Jerry Dunne, that Grand Knight of Columbus, and Lady Dunne, both of Country Club royalty, were seen enjoying the tea dancing last Sunday afternoon. They plan to hold court in our club this month, as entertainment chairmen, and have already decided their fellow peers will enjoy a good old-fashioned square dance, in costume. How's about it, folks? Swing 'em to the right, swing 'em to the left, if there's Turkey in the Straw there is sure to be coyn. Wednesday night, August 27th, is the time. Prizes and fun. Overheard among the tea dancers Sunday: "Don't Mr. and Mrs. Sparow dance well!" ... Member Grace Wing giving with the blarney about Georgia, but tongue-tied as to why all Georgians live in Florida ... Chubby Oelkers asking for tea ... Mrs. Pierce and Helen Pennock arranging some dandy pictures and asking for "smiles, please." "All in favor" has been unanimous about the beverage bar for the junior members out in the patio by the band shell on dance nights. This will be a permanent feature. Fashion Shows Two fashion shows are on the slate. The first will be August 16, Saturday (noon) when Altheas will feature an all-college girl show, fashioned by college girls, coordinated by Mrs. Benway. Reservations are in order. Mrs. Watkins says there will be 25 models, plus programs. Sounds like a wow. The next regular fashion show will be August 30, Saturday, noon. The merchants were unable to get their fall styles in July, but will have them ready by the 30th. Member Gloria Robins will again coordinate. Remember the slogan, "Coral Gables styles for Country Club members, modeled by Country Clubbers?" Golf Tourney Bill Gorman, chairman of the golf group, has in mind a Country Club of Coral Gables Golf Tournament in September. Qualifying rounds will be nine holes including all play-offs, except the finals which will be 18 holes. All social members of the club are eligible, although those not holding golf memberships will be required to pay greens fees. There will be enough flights to include all players, so here's your chance to squeeze in golf after those busy office hours. More about this as plans progress. So many people have gone on vacation for August that Princess Nina has discontinued her ballet classes until September or October. Did you know that your fellow member, Mrs. Fritz Gordon, started the library for the mental institution at Chattahoochee in 1933? That new play director, Bob Bakke, has made Boy Scout films that are in great demand all over Scouting kingdom? That Bud Lowe made a Christmas hobby in NYC of answering "dead-letter" pleas to Santa Claus with the verbal message "Santa Claus left these presents with me to give to you." The winners of the bridge group, Monday, July 28 were Mrs. Isabelle Chapman and Mrs. Madge Evans. BEAUTIFUL SINGER Dorothy Patrick and Arturo de Cordova have the leading roles in a story of the birth of the music that set the whole world dancing in "New Orleans," showing at the Grove Theatre, Saturday at 9:30 p. m. and Sunday and Monday, August 9-11.
STEVE COCHRAN, seems dubious about Carmen Miranda's double role in "Copacabana" and here Groucho Marx is trying to square things. It's lavish, lilting, and laugh-laden, and showing at the Parkway Theatre Friday through Sunday, August 8-10.
