MEET THE JAYCEES Bright Future for Gables Seen by Widdersheim
If you believe that Coral Gables has a bright future and if you'll pardon the pun, then you see "eye-to-eye" with Dr. Jack M. Widdersheim, optometrist, upon whom the Jaycee spotlight falls this week. When asked for his opinion on the community, Dr. Widdersheim retorted, "After seeing a good portion of the world and Georgia, I picked Coral Gables for my future because, in my opinion, it has a bright future and above all it is where I want to have a part in it." Born In Akron Born in Akron, Ohio, 28 years years ago, Dr. Widdersheim came to Florida 14 years later. He attended Miami High School and the Southern College of Optometry. Asked just what an optometrist does, he replied, "Examines eyes, fits contact lenses, directs visual training and constructs spectacles in his own laboratory." In Army Dr. Widdersheim spent four years in the Army Air Force and was released to inactive duty with the rank of captain. He still retains his rank in the Army Air Force Reserve program. His army experience included instruction in B-26 bombers and first pilot, PBY Catalina in the 2nd Emergency Rescue Squadron Detachment. He also served as commanding officer of the rescue outfit. To Pacific His assignments took him to Morotae, Dutch East Indies, the Philippine Islands and the Hawaiian Islands. He is married, his wife being named Nikkii. They have one daughter, Judy. He is a member of the Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, Shenandoah Presbyterian Church, Breakfast Club, Southeast Florida Optometric Association, Florida and National Optometric Associations, the American Legion and Phi Theta Upsilon. For hobbies he prefers sailing, flying and fishing.

Sample Starts Defense For Biscayne Suit
(Continued from Page 1) between Matheson and Biscayne Beach, Inc. The plaintiffs claim that they are isolated from the main part of the city by many miles of land and the bay waters, and that the city doesn't and cannot render municipal services. Circuit Judge N. Vernon Hawthorne has issued a writ of quo warranto directing the city to appear on September 1 to answer the suit. Attempts to exclude Biscayne Key from the Gables limits were first made during the last session of the state legislature, when members of the Dade delegation proposed a bill for that purpose. The action caused such a storm of protest from Gables citizens that the delegation did an about face and excluded only that portion of the key that lies within Crandon Park.
'U' Veterans Must Request Annual Leave
The Veterans Administration today reminded veterans now enrolled under the GI bill at the University of Miami that their applications for annual leave to cover the intermission period between the summer and fall terms must reach the VA regional office at Dinner Key by Aug. 27. All veterans in institutional training at other types of schools also are affected by the ruling that applications for annual leave to cover the period between courses or terms must be submitted to the VA regional office at least 30 days prior to termination of the current course or term. Failure of veterans to apply for leave to cover this period will result in automatic interruptions at the conclusion of their periods of training as listed on the records at the VA office and the suspension of subsistence payments until their training status is reestablished after enrollment for new terms of courses, Earl C. Adams, chief of vocational rehabilitation and education, stated. Letters applying for leave should be addressed to the Registration Section, Veterans Administration Regional Office, Dinner Key, Miami, and bear the veteran's full name and "C" number.
Swim Test Week Slated
Winding up a summer-long water safety campaign during which the number of swimming certificates issued will go over the 2,000 mark, the Dade County Red Cross will sponsor "Swimming Test Week" Aug. 18 thru 30. T. J. Bleier, Red Cross water safety chairman said that classes will be held during text week at the three municipal pools in the county - Venetian, Hialeah and Eomestead. During the six days of instruction and tests, children will be given opportunity to finish courses partially completed during the summer and to take tests for Red Cross certificates. "This will be the last opportunity for children to complete swimming lessons before school opens," said Chairman Bleier, "and we urge those whose courses were interrupted by vacations or for other reasons to enroll." Registration will take place simultaneously at the three pools Monday, August 25 as follows: Beginners, 9 to 10 a. m.; intermediates, 10 to 11 a. m., and swimmers, 11 a. m. to noon.

Carls Plays Game Twice In Tourney
(Continued from Page 1) where the protest was lodged, with the disputed Stephen's player in first. Perpetual Motion Powers promptly struck out the next Lauderdale batter to retire the side, and Carls went on to add one run in the fifth to the two they'd racked up in the first inning and take the ball game, 3- A vastly underdog Rogers Electric team, staunchly supported by a bleacher-ful of vocal Gableite rooters, bowed to the Pan American Clippers Wednesday night - but only after they'd scared the first-seeded team nearly out of their bright blue britches. Paced by the brilliant mound performance of Jimmy McGuire, Rogers led the worried tourney favorites 1-0 until the top half of the fourth when a Pan Am pinch hitter socked a two-bagger with the bases loaded to score his three teammates. Pan Am collected another tally in the top half of the seventh for a final 4-1 victory. Rogers' lone run was a homer clouted by right fielder Hal Johnson in the second.
