CORAL GABLES COUNTRY CLUBBER

By GORDON TAYLOR. Life flows around a club manager in a never ending current of activity. The morning mail may have a card from California, like the one from Lt. Col. Dodge H. Bean, Long Beach Air Base, thanking us for the wonderful time he had while being entertained by members at the club. Or the card may be from "The Beebes" telling us about their trip in the Canadian Rockies being "tops" in scenery. The card of the Rockies is in sharp contrast from the placid lake scene showing canoeiers and sailers on Big Cedar Lake at Gonrings, West Bend, Wisconsin, in which Billy Harting says that her days are filled with sailing, boating, swimming and shooting against par. "The shivering I do on my own time," she says. Interrupting that routine and being escorted by our pretty receptionist, is a guest of Mr. and Mrs. Howard H. Gleason's coming in to pick up his guest card. Lt. B. Griffith Jones, U. S. Army Air corps, former member of the Country Club, has just gotten in on leave from his station at Okinawa. He said it was great to get some fresh vegetables again, but he didn't seem to mind the thoughts of returning to what he called the "Bermuda of the Pacific". To Call Figures. A call from Mrs. Jerry Dunne to say that her daughter, Violet, will do the calling for the Square Dance feature Wednesday night, the 27th . . . Herbert Tuckerman, that genial member of the theatre executive committee stopped in to get a requision for plywood to be used on the stage setting of "Meet The Wife". Nook and his co-director wife, Gwynn, have a beautiful new home that needs lots of attention, but they still find time for their theatre activities. Capt. William Davies dropped in to say how busy he was with his yard work, but not too busy to come in and have lunch with Mrs. Davies. Following him was Lt. Scobie of our fire department, who was requested to come in and assist us in locating permanent fire extinguisher position. Wendel Sumner needed the Kiwanis ticket box so the meeting could come to order at 12:15. Spiced Luncheon. Lunch was spiced with scintillating conversation about how many more luncheon menu sheets should be ordered, and how much additional stationery should be ordered for our form letters. A pleasant interruption came from a brief chat with Judge Robertson. An SOS from the bartender, who needed rye, rum, Scotch, vermouth, brandy and gin. Chef Maxwell needed "lots" of sherry for his buffet dinner, featuring lobster a la newburgh. I was in the middle between differences of opinions on the Federal tax dancing by Ben Smethurst and Lee Gebhart. Mr. H. T. Nugent admitted that maybe his seriously ill wife did serve as a convenience until we get our new bar. That grand member of the club, Mr. Delanoy, advised us that his seriously ill wife was still seriously ill. Bob Symington showed great relief when telling of the recovery of previously ill Mrs. Symington. Our ever-cheerful bookkeeper, Mrs. Burel, got stars in her eyes when mentioning her forthcoming marriage. A call from our club president, Phil Laurence, assured us of his being able to stop by and sign some checks. Expectant father, and new restaurant manager, Maurice Burritt, came in to check over the beautiful salad dish, topped with a chocolate eclair, that will be served to members attending the Junior Fashion Show on Saturday the 16th. The popularity of the chicken buffets has grown so that we will have another this coming Wednesday, the 20th. The following Wednesday will be a barbecue to spice the activities of the costumed members attending the square dance. Incidentally, the whole evening will not be kept square dance, just a bit of it. Popular bachelor, PAA Capt. Roger Smart, came in to say good-bye. He has been transferred to Brussels for a two-year stretch. Roger said, "I'm keeping my membership because I intend to come back." Winners of the Duplicate Bridge, Aug. 4th were: Mr. and Mrs. Hautz, Mrs. Overbeck and Mrs. McGuire. Club Calendar. ZANE GREY'S thrilling action film, "Gunfighters", also takes time out for romance. Here's Randy Scott waiting for the outcome of this argument between Barbara Britton and Dorothy Hart. The picture will be shown at the Grove Theatre Saturday at 9:50 P. M. and Sunday and Monday, Aug. 16-18.

TERESA WRIGHT and RAY MILLAND co-starring in the film play, "The Imperfect Lady," playing next Tuesday and Wednesday at the Gables theatre.

Larson Map Distributed In Gables

Distribution of 27,000 copies of the latest edition of Larson's Commercial Map and Directory of Coral Gables was started this week, according to L. W. "Larry" Larson, publisher. Labeled the "1948 edition", the new map was printed on the presses of the Riviera-Times' commercial printing division. The cover of the map calls attention to Coral Gables as the gateway to the Everglades National Park with Larson stating that he got the idea from an "Our Town" column in the Riviera-Times. The map shows points of interest and bus lines, while county sections that jut into Coral Gables are shown as a shaded area with streets being given their proper numbered designations, rather than being indicated as extensions of Gables streets. A street index, keyed to the map proper, is included to enable readers to find streets speedily. Names of streets, changed during the past year by city commission action, are brought up to date in the new map.

To Visit Tennessee

Mr. and Mrs. George Wight and Mrs. Wight's uncle, J. B. McCutcheon, who makes his home with them, left this week for a three-weeks vacation with kinsfolk in Alamo and Memphis, Tenn., also Iuka, Miss.
