Much Work, Little Glory For ‘Back Stagers’
'Meet the Wife' Stage Hands Deserve Plaudits Behind the scenes of any successful stage production is a group of hard working people who deal in the "blood, sweat and tears" of the show while the members of the cast receive the kudos, plaudits and bouquets. No exception to the rule is the "stage crew" for "Meet The Wife", the show now being put through its rehearsal paces by the Country Club Players, with opening night scheduled for September second and additional performances on the fourth and fifth. They Are Essential When the house lights are dimmed and the curtain rises on act one of "Meet The Wife," most of the handiwork of this group will be taken for granted by the audience. But if it weren't for their efforts, there would be no lights, no scenery, no props—in fact, no audience and no play. Supervising this group of enthusiasts who bask only in the reflected glory of the actors, is Mrs. O. H. P. Kenney, who as stage manager is responsible that the stage is letter perfect, with every prop in its place. For if an actor reaches for a lamp or a telephone that has not been placed on stage, he is apt to blow his lines and the play will suffer. The "scavengers" of the production are the members of the properties committee headed by Mrs. H. T. Nugent. This group must scour the town to garner furniture, lamps, vases, telephones and the multitude of articles called for in the script. Working with Mrs. Nugent are Mrs. Walter S. Ashby, Mrs. H. C. Binns and Sam Elcock, Jr. Audience Needed Though some may say "The play's the thing," it would amount to very little without an audience. Therefore, it falls to the lot of the ticket committee, headed by Mrs. E. C. Hodge, to insure a capacity house for each performance with the proper seat allotted to each customer. Aiding Mrs. Hodge in peddling the ducats are Mrs. Frances Embry, co-chairman, assisted by Mrs. Les Gebhardt. Making sure that the lights function properly and that the curtain doesn't stick, is the technical staff headed by R. G. Tuckerman, with Blaine Haigler, Dr. Donald T. Leigh and Glen Erwin assisting. Costuming is a vital part of any production and will be supervised by Mrs. A. Leo Volmer and Mrs. Royce Powell. Beats Tom Tom Pictures and publicity are also important in the pre-curtain activity. Without pictures, publicity is difficult and without publicity that ticket committee has an almost impossibl etask. Capt. Fred Jones is heading the photography staff for this production while Mrs. E. E. Pennock, assisted by Miss Dora Thomas, is beating the publicity tom tom. Every play must have its proper setting, and that calls for scenery, an art in itself. Miss Lois Williams, who heads the scenery committee, has already presented a colored scale drawing of the scenery neccssary for "Meet The Wife". This will be translated into actual sets by George Nicholls, Richard Kenney, Donald Dutcher and Robert Farrell. Sound effects will be under the direction of Mrs. M. Cardwell Harrison. J. Francis Hickey, as house chairman, will be in charge of the ushers, assisted by Miss Patricia McClintock Pennock. Making sure that the actors and actresses look just right under the glare of the footlights and spots will be the make-up committee headed by Dr. Sidney Casell, assisted by Mrs. Henry Frantz, Miss Thomas Campbel land Miss Barbara Binns.
WORKING OUT DETAILS for the coming Country Club Players' production, "Meet The Wife," are Mrs. R. G. Tuckerman, promptor; Bob Blake, director; Mrs. O. H. P. Kenney, stage manager and Mrs. H. T. Nugent, properties chairman.

Gables Presbyterian Church Considers Manse Purchase
The Gables Presbyterian Church has been called by its Session to meet in a Congregational meeting, following the sermon at the 11:00 A. M. worship service next Sunday (August 17th) for the purpose of considering and taking action with reference to procuring a manse, as a permanent residence for their minister and his family. Dr. B. M. Larson and family are living temporarily at 1202 Genoa. Dr. Larson stated that the congregation in its meeting Sunday, will take specific and final action looking to acquiring a manse as the first unit of the congregation's material equipment, and that he anticipated action soon to follow looking toward the erection of a church plant designed to meet the congregation's rapidly growing needs and to fit idealistically into the beautiful designing and efficient planning of the Gables community. Dr. Larson announces as his sermon topic for the 11:00 a. m. church service next Sunday, conducted in the Merrick Demonstration school, 39 Zamora ave., as "Playing God," in which he will say in part: "The major difficulties in life spring from man's attempt to be God. Man's first temptation was 'and ye shall be as God'. The primary temptation of man across the centuries has been to assume divine prerogatives. "The basic sin is pride. By it man becomes self sufficient. He recognizes no authority beyond himself. He, himself, becomes the only god he knows or recognizes. "Out of this grows social confusion and community disaster. On a world level, this leads to international squabbles, and global war. "Life becomes based on achievement. Yet the best that such a philosophy has produced is the sorry picture of a world drained white by the shedding of human blood on the battlefields of world wide war. "The security of the world lies in the question whether man is willing to discontinue playing at being God, and wills to become co-workers with the great Son of God in doing the works of God on earth."
Baptist
On Sunday, August 17th, at the University Baptist church, at the morning worship service, 11 a. m., the pastor, Dr. Ladislau Biro will bring the message on the topic: "Right Makes Small Things Significant." The choir will sing, "He Shall Give His Angels Charge," by Bush. message at the evening worship (Continued on Page 11)
