New Power Line to Improve Gables Electrical Service
Will Provide Advantages Of Own Plant Coral Gables will virtually have the advantage of an electric generating plant within its city limits when work is completed on the installation of a new and unusual type of cable, linking the substation at Douglas road to the Miami generating plant, W. D. Fuller, local manager of the Florida Power and Light Co. revealed today. Improved electric service for this community and all of the area south of the Miami River will also result from the installation, he said. Steel Pipe Used Consisting of a steel pipe, five inches in diameter, containing three insulated copper cables, surrounded by oil under terrific pressure, the line will reach approximately five miles underground from the enlarged Miami electric generating plant to the Coconut Grove substation. "This radically new line virtually places an electric generating plant at Coral Gables' and Coconut Grove", W. D. Fuller, Coral Gables district manager, said, in pointing out that the line will channel 66,000 volts directly to the substation for distribution to this area. It also ties in with transmission lines serving other substations in the Coral Gables and West Miami area and connects with the company's statewide system and its Lauderdale and Riviera plants, giving a two-way flow of power into this section. In addition to improving service, this new line provides huge amounts of power for growth of Coral Gables and adjacent territory. "Although this new tie line with its armor of steel pipe is the first of its kind used in Florida, it has been proven highly successful by power companies in Detroit, Philadelphia and New York," Fuller declared. "One of its amazing features is that oil inside will be kept at the high pressure of 200 pounds per square inch. This is quite an engineering feat, considering that the line will be almost five miles long. Prevents Deterioration "Oil at high pressure prevents deterioration of the insulation around the cables and helps prevents the cables 'blowing up'. Also oil helps resist corrosion within the steel pipe, and, besides, if the pressure in the pipe drops, we know that's a danger signal and we can look for trouble before service is actually interrupted." Fuller stressed, however, that the line is practically "fool proof" and the steel pipe, as extra "armor", has a thick coating of anti-corrosion substance around it. Area To Benefit "It will bring to this area the full benefits of the new 44,000 KW turbine generator which is now being added to the Miami electric plant," Fuller stated. "The tie line and the new generator, which increases the Miami plant's production to 82,000 kilowatts, are scheduled to go into operation late this year." Using a map, Fuller traced the present transmission lines and those proposed to connect with a new 86,000 kilowatt plant the company plans on building to the south of Coral Gables. When this overall project is completed, Coral Gables, and in fact the Greater Miami area, will be encircled with a network of transmission lines. Pipe Underground Some of the difficult engineering problems surrounding the new feeder line were cited by Fuller. The steel pipe is laid at least four feet underground and in some areas its depth is 10 feet. It must cross the Miami river, requiring that a trench more than four feet deep be dredged across the river bottom. In crossing under a street, as in the case of S. W. 13th street this week, it was necessary to use a special machine to bore a large hole under the pavement and force the steel pipe through. Once the pipe is laid, the electric cables will be pulled through openings left at intervals up to 2,300 feet. A wire is blown through the 2,300-foot lengths of pipe, a steel cable is attached and pulled through, which, in turn, is used to pull into place the three heavy electric cables. The final pull required is so tremendous that a huge motor driven winch is required. Joints Welded All of the joints of the steel pipe are welded on the spot, and although the pressure within will be 200 pounds per square inch, the joints are tested with 500 pounds of pressure to be certain they have an extra margin of strength. In speaking of the new feeder line, Fuller said he was appreciative of the cooperation and patience shown by power company customers during interruptions caused by lightning and elements beyond company control. The feeder line is merely one of the many projects the company is now working upon, he said, in its $85,000,000 construction program for improvement and expansion of electric service. HOW FLORIDA LIGHT AND POWER COMPANY'S new type of underground tie line is tested. Air under pressure of 500 pounds per square inch is forced into the big steel pipe just before it is laid underground. Waterboxes placed around joints, as a test, bubble with escaping air if the newly welded joints are not airtight. CONSISTING OF A five-inch steel pipe holding three insulated electric cables and oil under terrific pressure, Florida Power and Light Company's new tie line will reach five miles from the enlarged Miami electric generating station to the Coconut Grove substation. Here workmen are testing the newly welded joints. IMPROVED ELECTRIC SERVICE for Coral Gables and the area served by Florida Power and Light Company south of the Miami River will result from this radically new type of electric tie line now being installed. Shown above, workmen are lowering the five-inch steel pipe into a deep trench at S. W. 13th street and S. W. First avenue.

Registration Scheduled for Debate 'Shop'
Registration for the annual high school debate workshop of the University of Miami's division of adult education has been announced for next week by; Dr. C. Raymond Van Dusen, professor of speech, who with Donald Sprague, assistant professor of speech, will conduct the workshop. Open Monday Students may register Monday through Friday from 9 a. m. to 4 p. m. and 7 to 9 p. m. in Room 234, north campus building, for the workshop which will begin Monday, Aug. 25, and ends Friday, Sept. 5. Workshop sessions will be held on each of these evenings from 7 to 9. Course Outlined Instruction will be given on gathering information and making debate notes, and practice on this year's high school question, "Resolved: That the federal government should require arbitration of labor disputes in all basic American industries," will be emphasized. National Forensic League debate rules will be taught and observed in practice. Mrs. Herberta Ann Leonardy will act as coordinator for the workshop. Dr. Van Dusen, who is chairman of the speech department and speech pathologist at the University, will handle individual delivery and speech problems. Principles and techniques of debating will be taught by Mr. Sprague, who coached this year's university debate team which won 17 of its 19 debates.
