'Wildcat' Squad Faces Hurricanes This Evening Philadelphia Report Indicates Tough Bartle Ahead

(Continued from Page One) else can be sai" or explained other than "Shake it off"— which is the attitude of the varsity squad that made the trek up here. They were so fouled up by poor blocking, tackling, passing, spirit and coaching that the only conclusion they agree on is that they had to get that ball game out of their system. Just about everything was wrong that the 31-odd thousand fans that watched the game diagnosed except for one vital point: The Hurricanes were over-conditioned and not in poor shape—and there's the key to the situation, outside of the generally accepted fact that Coach Bob Woodruff's visiting Baptists were a hot ball club. Certainly no one has spared Harding in criticizing his ball club—least of all the Old Man himself. And even this scribe—who actually likes his brand of football—must admit he is the most to be blamed. But I will immediately qualify that by stating that he developed a great football team too early and couldn't keep them from slipping after the first five minutes produced seventy yards which equalled one touchdown and then, etc., etc. Won't Argue With 'the Rock' Notre Dame's Knute Rockne said that losing the opening game handicaps any football team for the season, so I can't very well claim that dropping that opener might have taken the pressure off and been a good thing for the Hurricanes. Just for the record, let me say that I do not predict our team will win this ball game—only that the score will be a lot closer than most people believe. I didn't say that we'd run over Baylor either but that the 'Canes should be able to. That isn't pulling myself on the back: I'm a naturally cautious guy about reading football scores from an ouija board before the game.

Stork Visits Frog Hollow So 'Hubby' Writes News

By FRAN HICKEY Ond man stork finally dropped anchor out our way the other P. M.—Tuesday, the 80th to be exact, and in our good charge left a small but evident baby daughter. It goes without saying that this makes me the proverbial proud father, as well as your substitute correspondent for a short while seeing as how the "missus" will be on the mend for several weeks. Incidentally she is receiving at Room 3, Coral Gables Hospital. Now for as much news as the excitement of being a very new father will permit. The Herbert Tuckermans', our most ardent Country Club members took in the Cireps Party at the Club last Sunday, and had as their special guest young Jimmy Crymes. Gwen prettied up Mr. Boo (her pet spaniel) and presented him in the Pet Show—no ribbons were won, but I understand that Boo had one heck of a time. "Nook" Tuckerman is presently rehearsing a major role in the forthcoming Country Club Theatre Group production "Outward Bound". It looks as if Betty Van Riper of S. W. 60th Court has started in urge in earnest, for the word is out that, as of this week, she can be found modeling and selling at Aithen's on the "Mile". Mrs. Hal Deckle of S. W. 60th Ave., entertained at a bridal shower given on Monday night by sister members of the Florida Epsilon Chapter of Beta Theta Chi for Maxine Stephenson—refreshments and unusual games were the high points of the evening. Keeping up with the Junior Women's Club of Coral Gables is a little out of my line, however the neighborhood has it's fair share of local club women and Kay Diestelhorst informs me with the winter season approaching that many parties will be held round these parts, taking in both social and business events of the club. Mrs. W. W. Davies entertained the executive board members of the National Musical Soroity, Sigma Alpha Iota Alumni Chapter at her home on Monday evening of this week. The talented Mary Davies is scheduled to appear with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Coral Gables as soloist on October 7 at the Coral Gables Elementary School in conjunction with a program being sponsored by the Soroptimists Club to raise funds for the South Florida Children's Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Davis of Winter Haven, Fla., were the week-end guests of the Sam Porters'. Mrs. Davis is the mother of Mrs. Porter. Alberta Holstein of S. W. 59th Ave., a former "Wave" Officer has at present as house guests two girls who also served with her as able members of the Naval Service.

Eight Gableeites Are Pledged At Florida

Eight Coral Gables students at the University of Florida have pledged fraternities, according to an announcement today. Kirk Westcott, son of the Ray J. Westcott's, 1428 Avenue Medina and Thomas Blakey, son of the B. H. Blakey's, 1228 S. Greenway Drive, were pledged this week to Phi Delta Theta, the fraternity that listed the third largest pledge class on the campus. Darryl McCall was the only Coral Gables youth to pledge Chi Phi this fall. Darryl, who pledged the fraternity along with many other Florida students, is the son of the J. D. McCall's, 334 Avenue Sarto. Sons of two more Coral Gables families were pledged to a social group when Jean Sheppherd, and Lawrence B o i d o acknowledged their bids to Pi Kappa Phi, one of the 21 Greek letter groups on the Gainesville campus. Pi Kappa Alpha added two brothers to their list when both Brooke and Willard Dunwoody, sons of Mrs. Mary Louise Dunwoody, 525 Coral Way, accepted bids to the fraternity. Sigma Chi received one pledge from Coral Gables, Donald L. LeBaron, son of the Forrest D. LeBaron's, 1531 Avenue Catalonia. The university announced that the pledge classes at the university this year were the largest in Florida's history, with 600 students officially pledged to national social fraternities during rush week. Since the fraternities are still revising and adding to their lists the final figure will probably be over 650.

Street Names Confusing In 'Lower No Man's Land'

BY DOT THAGARD Riviera-Times Correspondent With "the Frog Hollowers' following and the Schenley Parkites 'barking', we'd like to say "Hi" too. We are that controversial area known today as Lower No-Man's Land, altho we are all agreed "Confusion Squares" would be more appropriate, due to our through streets having three names. There is for one, Obispo, Madiera Avenues, and 16th Lane; another has Sorolla, Zamora, and 16th Terrace, while the last is Milan, Mendoza, and 16th Street. "Confuoxin ain't it". You just tell people where you live, and before you are through you have had to draw a map. You might have a 600 Sorolla address but your next door neighbor has a 4402 S.W. 16th Terrace address. Imagine the poor mail man's dilemma. Residents are so tempted, when expecting guests, top soil, or the express man, to put out a sign, saying "THIS IS IT!" Mr. Haas Recovering We are all so happy that George Haas of 625 Avenue Obispo, is home from the hospital and convalescing nicely. Mr. and Mrs. Haas have as their guest, Mr. Haas' sister Mrs. Robert Mayer of Berkley, Mifh. Ruth and Sherman Anderson have bought the new home at 706 Avenue Obispo. These newlyweds are from Chicago and say they have weathered many a thunderstorm as bad as "that Hurricane". Late Vacation Mrs. Marvin Ebelmesser is taking a late vacation, driving north to Tennessee, but with Mary Lou's sense of direction, we wouldn't be surprised if she wound up in Key West. Dr. and Mrs. Ebelmesser have sold their home at 707 Avenue Obispo and will soon be moving to an apartment in the Gables. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Grote have purchased the former home of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Borchert at 691 Avenue Sorolla. After selling their Gables home, Mr. and Mrs. Grote traveled to California only to find "sand in their shoes" and returned to this area. Newcomers Among other newcomers to Sorolla are Mrs. Susan James and her two sons, Bobbie and Dickie. Staying with Mrs. James and the boys are Miss Margaret Stanfield and Miss Mary Kerr. Back in Obispo, we droppel in on Mr. and Mrs. I. Grau at 722 Obispo. Mr. Grau gave us a helpful hint, (yes I said mister) in baking pies. If you line the bottom crust of a fruit pie with graham cracker crumbs, the bottom of your pie will never be soggy. Mr. Grau, girls, is a retired baker. Did you know also that papayas (they are almost as plentiful as avacados) before they are quite ripe, split, buttered and baked as Hubbard Squash are, delish. Well guess Dot's Dot today folks, gotta hear how the Yankees are doin' ... Darkness Doubles Traffic Trouble.
