CORAL LAKE NEWS Population Is Increased As 'U' Students Arrive
By VERA BARNES Riviera-Times Correspondent The trailers continue to come in as the start of the college term draws near. There are new students coming down to enroll for the first time, and others returning to finish up or do post-graduate work. We saw Lyle Mattson and Keith Foye drive in the other day, in a brand new, cream-colored convertible. Lyle has been talking about selling his trailer and buying a house. Guess that summer work up in Washington, D.C. was really profitable. J. B. Anthony of Lynch Station, Va., Leon Luke, his wife and baby, from Alburquerque, N.M., Austin Parker, and his wife and son from Shawnee, Oklahoma, Edward Sheldon and his family from Titusville, and D. C. McClelland of Chicago, are all new students, registering in camp for the first time. We hope they won't let the flood waters disturb them too much. From New Jersey Ralph Vorhees returned from a summer in New Jersey to find his porch and trailer under water. It's gone down now, and Ralph is busy getting his place in order before school starts again. He's majoring in aeronautical engineering. There have been other new arrivals too, among them Clayton Clark and his two children from Miami, and Mrs. Baumgartner and Barbara, and Kenneth Wheeler, all of Cooperstown, N.Y. The Pages have just returned to Coral Lake after a long trip through the southwest, and west. They had to sell their large trailer in Oregon because they couldn't get it over the mountains. They comprimised on a smaller one, and are very pleased with it. Jerry Page plans to stay here now and is going back to work in his old line, carpentering. The Flood There has been so much comment all over about the flooded conditions, that I feel as though our small flood is of small importance. It has inconvenienced a lot of people who aren't used to water in and around their trailers, but the general attitude seems to be to take it in their stride and .nay-be the water will go away soon. The folks on the hill are having the last laugh because their lots are nice and dry, while we in the lower section are still going around in our bare feet. It's rather a novelty to go out your back door and find fish and tadpoles right at your back step. As bad as things seem to be here, it's always worse someplace else as the Hamiltons can testify. They just built a new home out at 109th Ave. and 3rd street. It's under water, and they are back here living in their trailer until the water goes down and things dry out. We've also had two or three other trailers come in from other places where the water is getting too high for comfort. We look like a small section of Venice, with our waterways and bridges. Mrs. Trudy Love told me this morning that she has her canoe on order. And of course, the small fry love it all. Show me the youngster that doesn't love to get his feet wet. Speaking of Mrs. Love, reminds me that her daughter-in-law Mary, is cramming in order to take her osteopathic state boards in November. Long Arm of Coincidence One day last fall, our two ex-army nurses, Ruth Haith, and Evelyn Rogers were driving home from the University. In front of them, a young man on a motorcycle hit a soft spot, skidded and went down. The girls had to swerve to avoid hitting him, stopped, and gave first aid and then took him to the hospital. That was the last they heard of the young man. Then imagine their surprise when a new trailer pulled into the lot behind them, and the new tenant was the young man that they had helped last fall. Carlton Johns and his father were both glad to see the girls and to be able to thank them for their help. Carlton's Dad has since returned to Chicago, but plans to return at Christmas, to spend the holidays with his son. Free Treat Tuesday a misfortunate accident turned into a free treat for the youngsters of the park. The freezer unit in the camp store, run by Lou Heffner, went on the fritz, and rather than have the Eskimo pies spoil, he called in all the children and passed out the slightly gooey pies. They had to furnish their own plates, and you never saw such activity as the word went round, and the line formed. Several mothers reported lost appetites at supper time last night, but there were no serious stomach aches! Attended Funeral Fred Wilkins has returned from Lansing, Michigan, where he attended his father-in-law's funeral. Mrs. Wilkins and their small daughter, Vicki, remained there, while Fred came back to sell their trailer, and to have an appendectomy at the Veteran's Hospital. He was a patient there some time ago, but had to build himself up before he could undergo this operation.
