CORAL GABLES— COUNTRY CLUBBER

BY GORDON TAYLOR CIRCUS DAY at the club last Sunday was everything a real circus should be: rainy, noisy, confused, crowded, fun and exciting. But, it was not accidental. The affair went down in club history as one of our successful parties, and, while we are setting the record straight, I'll try my hand as historian. One night during the easting of "Ladies of the Jury", Mrs. Walter Ashby came to me and said: "Gordon, I have an idea you may like while figuring out a schedule for the Tournaments and Trophies Committee Entertainment Program. Why don't you have a Circus?" Seed Was Sown The seed was sown, the ideas started to pop and it was no time at all before those standing around had agreed that a circus would be good. The next morning I ran into Checker Norman and he wondered why I didn't include Mrs. Dolores Rohe in some of these committees. A short time later I called Mrs. Rohe and asked her to take the chairmanship of the circus as Mrs. Ashby felt it would be too much for her to handle. The idea appealed to Mrs. Rohe and she graciously consented to take charge. One week later, Dolores called a meeting of her committee and it was a pleasure to see such members take hold of a program that would offer so much entertainment for themselves and their kiddies. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Spencer took charge of the Fish Pond; Checker Norman said he'd get the Hurdy-Gurdy; Dr. and Mrs. A. Leo Vollmer took over the Pet Show and Novelties; Byron Sperow took charge of the cashiering; Mr. and Mrs. Dalton Wright took charge of the lighting and the Dog Act and the Motion Pictures; Robert Royce took charge of the Clowns and Dr. Robert McVoy arranged for the Parade of the Clowns; Mr. and Mrs. T. M. Holdcraft arranged for the Riding Ponies; Mrs. Walter Ashby arranged for the Horse Show; the Monkey Jungle Monkeys and helped with the Pet Show; and Mrs. Rohe arranged for the Elephant, the Decorations, the Youth Center Circus Act and Phillis Kapp Circus Ballet. Sidney Cassel did a fine job as Barker. Dick Marshall put in a lot of time trying to arrange for the Orange Bowl parade of Balloons, and exhibit booths, but there were too many obstacles. Gazley Thanked Many thanks for their wonderful cooperation go to John Gazley, of the Coral Gables Riding Academy; Member Muriel Marshall, the deluxe baton whirlier; Jackie May and her Youth Center dancers; Phillis Kapp and her Ballet; Mr. and Mrs. Guy Newman for their Dog act; Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Dumond of the Monkey Jungle; Princess Nina, Frances Schmitz, and Chet Davis for their reading of cards, palms and hearts; Checker Norman, Ed Goyette, Bob McVoy, and Robert Royce for their clowning; and to all the others who gave willingly of their time to make the Circus the successful show that it was. More Shows Planned More shows are planned and other committees are at work, so you who haven't time to enjoy participating actively can be sure of an interesting winter social schedule. Condolences are extended from the members and employees of the Club to Mrs. Florence Brown. We are glad to hear of the improving conditions of Mrs. W. R. Bunce after her serious operation. The bridge group has announced that they are planning a bridge rally with a buffet. Reservations for the buffet will be taken until 12:00 noon of the 16th. Call for your reservation. The winners of the Tuesday afternoon Contract Group were Mrs. William Jeffers and Mrs. Robert Kelly. Those who won first place Thursday night, September 25th were Mrs. Ruth Gunion and Mr. Carlton Tweed. CLUB EVENTS Fri.
