Former Coral Gables Girl Miss Nancy Humphreys Is Engaged to Dr. Allman

Announcement of the engagement of Miss Nancy Humphreys, former Coral Gables girl, now of Rome, Italy and Dr. Richard T. Allman of Washington, D. C. has been made by the bride-elect's mother, Mrs. Harold W. Graybeal of 3789 S. W. 29th street. Miss Humphreys is also the daughter of John W. Humphreys, 1130 S. W. 36th court, former prominent real estate operator in Coral Gables, during the early days of the boom. Her brother, Reynolds Beckwith Humphreys, who was born in Coral Gables in 1923, is a third year man at the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md. Nancy was educated at the University of Miami and during the war served in the Marine Corps, being stationed in Washington as a staff member of the Marine Corps Gazette. Before enlisting in the Marine Corps she did newspaper work in Coral Gables and also was in the public relations office of the PAA. Betrothal of the couple followed an acquaintance made in Athens, Greece, both when were serving on the UNRRA mission. Miss Humphreys is now in Rome, with the U. S. Foreign Relief commission. He is a graduate of the University of Toronto and received his Ph.D. from Cornell University, Ithaca, N. Y.

GABLEGRAMS

(Continued from Page Seven) Richard Frederick Gierseh, Jr., and shall be called "Dick." Mrs. Watt is the former Miss Elizabeth Giersch. The Watt's older child is two-year-old Michael Glover Watt... "Ellyn" is the name of the daughter born to Mr. and Mrs. Francis Hickey, Tuesday, at the Coral Gables Hospital. A first child, Ellyn's mother, the former Miss Mary Brennan, writes the 'Frog Hollow Weekly News Letter" for the Riviera-Times. * * * On their annual far-western big game hunting spree are Mr. and Mrs. George Simpson and Mr. and Mrs. Inman Patgett who left this weekend for Wyoming... Mrs. William L. Huntley is leaving Wednesday for Chicago, Ill., where she will be a guest at the Palmer House for some time. She plans to attend the opening game of football at Notre Dame on the 18th and will visit her son Bill, Jr., who is a student at Notre Dame University. Mrs. Huntley has many friends in the area, her former home, and will visit and probably attend some of the games with her very special friend, Mrs. Knute Rockne, widow of the famed football coach, Knute Rockne. * * * Mr. and Mrs. Ira Haycock are home at 917 Avenue Algeria after a summer vacation spent mostly in the New England states. Making their headquarters in Johnsbury, Vt., the Haycocks took trips around the New England historic states. They climbed Mt. Canan, N. H., by tram and Mt. Washington, highest peak in the White mountains, by cog train and loved every 'bump' of the latter. While in Canada-Great Island, Middle and Champlain lakes, Mr. Haycock did a little serious research, studying the types of land there, comparing the soil with Florida soil. When the couple returned homeward, they were in North Carolina the early part of September and had the pleasure, or pain, of hearing about the Sept. 17 hurricane in Blowing Rock. Mrs. Haycock tells us that the Blowing Rock newspapers carried streamer headlines to the effect "Miami Ghost Town," as hurricane hits. * * * Mr. and Mrs. Lester R. Barnhill of 312 Avenue Aledo are remembering the recent hurricane and the ribbing they took from their California house guests, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Bente, both of whom hit at the same time. Mrs. Bente, the former Miss Dorothy Barnhill of Coral Gables, and her husband motored in from their home in Newport Beach for a week's stay with their brother and sister-in-law. "It was during that awful week of no electricity," moans Mrs. Barnhill. However, parties and a dinner Saturday at the Naval Officers' Club are among the pleasantries the Bentes took back to California. * * * Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Sherwood have moved to 2825 Day Avenue, Coconut Grove, temporarily, until their new home, now building on Alhambra Circle, is completed. * * * Dr. and Mrs. Albert House completed 4,000 miles in a motor trip to New England and back, this summer. They returned this week to their home, 3505 Toledo Drive. They spent five weeks in Stamford, Conn., where Dr. House practiced medicine for 17 years and were widely entertained there. Dr. House, who has resided in Florida almost as many years as he practiced in Stamford, found that not one of his contemporaries (and there were 20 and only one older than Dr. House) were alive when he began inquiring for them. Returning, Dr. and Mrs. House were guests at the Minslyn Hotel in Luray, Va., for two weeks. * * * Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Girtman are returning this week-end to their home, 1700 LeJeune Road after a summer in their Cloudland, Ga., home. Mrs. John Nicholas, nee Zelma Girtman, and grandson Jose Charles Girtman, were summer-time guest. Mr. Girtman recently underwent an eye operation at Emory Hospital, Atlanta, from which he is recuperating splendidly... Mrs. Harry N. Rath also underwent an eye operation this week at the Coral Gables Hospital.
