COLONEL NELSON OPENS PERMANENT GABLES HOME
Col and Mrs. Gustin M. Nelson this week joined the circle of Army couples who have chosen Coral Gables as permanent headquarters. Mrs. Nelson was busy opening their home at 1309 Obispo in anticipation of the arrival of her husband from Wofford College, South Carolina, where he was assigned as professor of military science and tactics. The Colonel, a 1921 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and veteran of service in the Philippines, Hawaii and Europe, will retire from active duty within the next few weeks. During a one-and-a-half year World War II tour of duty in the European theater, he won the Silver Star with oak leaf cluster, the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star with cluster, the Croix de Guerre and a Presidential Unit Citation. On previous visits here, the Nelsons became members of the Country Club of Coral Gables and the colonel's lady, who served as first lieutenant in the Army Nurses Corps during the war, plans to resume her interest in golf. Col. Nelson was born in Illinois, while his wife is a native of Wisconsin.
Mrs. Herbert O. Vance, who left yesterday to attend the 89th birthday celebration of a distinguished kinsman, Colonel J. E. D. Shipp in Americus, Ga., known the country over as a lawyer and noted book collector. Colonel Shipp lives on a plantation just outside of Americus and houses his great collection in several adjoining buildings. He is a great uncle of Mrs. Charles W. Murray, mother of Mrs. Vance's and a sister-in-law of Mrs. Robert L. Shipp of Coconut Grove, both of whom accompanied Mrs. Vance. The trio, and Mrs. Vance's daughter Mary Herbert Vance, also in the group, will return Monday.

Football, Cooks, Hobbies Make Schenley Park News
By PEGGY GORDON Riviera-Times Correspondent Some other Hurricane continued to hold the headlines in Schenley Park this past week although the lack of intensity on the part of our team to blow a little harder Texas way deflated us a bit. There were personal reasons for wanting some Florida wind puffed in that direction after having spent a year attempting to keep Texas winds out of our eyes, noses, throats and houses. Those of us who weren't watching in person were huddled together in little groups surrounding the radios. We decided the boys were just giving us storm warnings, we hope, we hope. Meet the Cooks My little gal and I took a stroll around the neighborhood to see what was cooking with the Cooks, for we have two families living side by side in the next block. We weren't disappointed, either, when we saw Mrs. John Cook of 5808 SW 31st Street sitting on her front porch watching her two young 'uns Nancy, 6 and George Edward, 4. The Cooks moved into Schenley Park about two years ago. Mr. Cook, who until recently was with Eastern Airlines, now has his own insurance business in Coconut Grove. Mrs. Cook was a dietician before her marriage, which means an ulterior motive for calling on the Cooks. She has frequently made many helpful suggestions to this novice on delectable eatables and has been an inspiration on the economical short cuts. Next door to the John Cooks are Dr. and Mrs. Donald Cook. Dr. Cook is a professor of chemistry at the University of Miami and last year returned from San Juan, Puerto Rico after serving for 20 years in the School of Tropical Medicine. Hobbytes Jimmy McLaughlin, 5797 S.W. 31st Street, informs us that he and his mother have a new hobby—making perfectly stunning aluminum trays with original designs by hand. The designs include tropical fish, hibiscus flowers and narrow leaf patterns. An idea for an ideal Christmas gift. Speaking of hobbies, Ben McMahon has made a business of his hobby of collecting stamps which he conducts from his residence at 5760 S.W. 30th Street. Joseph Baker, 5821 SW 31st Street, has quite a collection of guns. Recovers from Burn We are glad to report that Mrs. Batchelor of 5848 SW 31st Street is greatly improved following a severe burn on her right hand and that Mrs. Gus Ashem of 57, SW 31st Street is walking around her yard again after a two-month illness. By the way, neighbors, last week when I asked for some barks (or news) from you, the only response was a telephone call from the Hartwell Hunters, giving forth with imitation barks into the mouthpiece. Now, for sure, some of you can do better than that! Phone 48-3405.
Mrs. Barker and Jack Enjoy New York City
Mrs. Edwin J. Barker, of 1852 S.W. 10th street and her son Jack, June, graduate at Miami Senior High school, spent an interesting summer in New York City. Making the trip north by train accompanied by Mrs. Barker's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lee Stephens, Mrs. Barker and Jack visited their eldest son and brother, Edwin, former University of Miami student, now in charge of first floor interior display work for Stern Brothers Department Store. They saw the shows and were especially intrigued with Sonja Henie's "Ice Time of 1948". On returning home, Jack, camera enthusiast, the work he intends to follow after college, found a speed boat awaiting him, graduation present from his father.
