Santacroce Plans Three Buildings Here

(Continued from Page One) also houses an additional room, cupboards and a tile bath. Arrived in 1926 Santacroce first came to Coral Gables in January 1926 when a doctor in New London, Conn., told him that he had tuberculosis. The talk and feeling folks everywhere in at those days now, and gives full credit to the Florida sun for his eventual health. "As I drove around Coral Gables I decided that here was a town that needed a tailor," Santacroce related. He propositioned "Gus" Gillespie, operator of Coral Way Cleaners, and arranged for a space in his business on a percentage business. Initial Cost $21 "It cost me exactly $21 to go in business in Coral Gables", he stated. "That was for lumber for a railing and a press board and the services of a carpenter. I traded a phonograph to a tailor on Miami Beach for an iron." Once in business, Santacroce began advertising in the Miami Riviera (now the Riviera-Times), adopting the slogan "Watch the Little Acorn Grow into a Giant Oak". Needed Larger Quarters In four months he found he needed larger quarters and leased part of the building at 218 Coral Way from the late C. Lee Reimer, dry store operator who later became mayor. In the years 1929 and 30, Santacroce had nutured his "acorn" into a $60,000 inventory the most of which was recorded in a national tailoring magazine. He bought the lot for his present building, three years ago. "I feel as if I were born here," Santacroce said, "It is such a friendly and beautiful community and so full of promise for the future." His partner, John P. Pelligrini was a designer for Arthur M. Rosenburg, Inc., custom tailoring firm of New Haven, Conn. A frequent winter visitor, he decided to locate here permanently last year, and joined forces with Santacroce. He has purchased the residence at 1028 Avenue Astoria.

Storm Damage Is $106,000

(Continued from Page One) aftermath of the scourge Saturday night, caused damage in five small areas in the Gables, the largest of which extended for seven blocks. Golf Course Flooded The Granada golf course was under five feet of water at the lowest point on Sunday morning. Pumps, pumping 21,000,000 gallons daily have reduced the water level in all of the areas, and the city manager said he thought they would all be dry by tomorrow afternoon. High water flooding the area of the Coliseum and the Merrick Demonstration School forced the school to close. Classes will be resumed on Tuesday. Covers Seven Blocks Approximately one foot of water stood on streets and yards in a seven-block area with the low spot near Granada Boulevard and Avenue Venetia. Water was also standing near Algeria and Pizarro for about three blocks and at Coral Way and Biltmore Way. Smaller high water areas were reported at numerous low spots in the city but most of them were dry today. Mellwain asked residents to refrain from driving or parking on parkways until they have dried out. Both the Coral and Gables theaters had high water in the front parts of the orchestra and were not operating yesterday. Seats were removed and placed in the sun to dry. Geysers Spout At one time, the high water table had caused 13 miniature "geysers" to spout from the floor of the Gables Theater. McIlwain commended W. T. Price for his assistance when one of the main pumps sheared a pin on Monday and became inoperative. "Price," he said, "dropped everything else and had the pump working again in five hours. Children had a field day, swimming on the golf course, wading and boating in flooded streets. Police reported two arrests, one for speeding on a water covered street and the other for driving a truck over the flooded golf course.

Gautier Cites Advantage of Consolidation

(Continued from Page One) will bear the classification of a "rural area" for taxing purposes. To Support Police Asked if Gables tax money would be used to support the proposed county police force, Gautier admitted that it would, but added that Gables money paid in county taxes is already helping support the present sherriff's office. He said a big advantage would be the fact that Dade, or Miami County, will have a charter under the plan and will not have to call on the legislature for special acts. Uses Word "If" Making frequent use of the word "if" Gautier contended that under the merger, money should eventually be saved and a better government assured. He explained that this will come about "if" the consolidated government is run as it should be and "if" the County of Miami working plans are properly supervised. As Gableites in the audience began to pose objections to his theory that consolidation will be an enduring his talk, Gautier stated "You can find thousands of objections to this plan but I think that the overall picture is good." His citing of the merger of all municipal health units as an example of the good that can come of consolidated government, drew cries of derision from his audience and the statements that Coral Gables' health services have suffered as a result of merging with the county.

RESCUE Radio Crew Aids In Flood Area

(Continued from Page One) brought to shelter during the twelve-hour mission. Infants and small children were included among the rescued. Red Cross Praised "The Red Cross was marvelous," Miss Falconer stated. "The duck crew worked from Friday through Tuesday morning without sleep and the workers in the shelters were tireless in their efforts to give aid to the refugees." She gave particular praise to Bob Baker, driver of the duck. The amphibious vehicle carried two newsreel crews aboard during the afternoon as well as the WBAY crew and the rescue workers. Dogs and cats were taken aboard as well as the human beings. "In many instances the water had reached roof level of the houses," Miss Falconer related. "One of the saddest sights was the many new homes, owned mostly by GI's, that have been ruined by the high water." The description of the flood area, plus interviews with workers and refugees was broadcast over the local station.
