INTRODUCING THE SOROPTIMISTS Opening Flower Shop Spells Contentment for Mrs. Petrecca
Back in 1943 a somewhat frightened but equally determined young woman opened a retail flower shop in the 200 block on Coral Way. The store and the business were new, also Coral Gables was new, but the beauty of the place, where home means more' had been holding out its arms to Juliet Petrecca, for many years. Mrs. Petrecca, another personality in the series of Riviera-Times stories of career girls, charter members of the Coral Gables Soroptimist Club, had been seeing Coral Gables each year as she returned to the Miami scene for the racing season with her husband owner and trainer of a string of horses. "Ten years of earning a living with the bangtails as sponsors were ten years of joy and torture" Mrs. Petrecca told your reporter. "One day we would be on top of the world, the next we would be sweeping out the stalls wondering where the next meal was coming from and all the time I was dreaming of a flower shop and smelling imaginary roses". With the war coming on and horse racing at pretty much of a standstill, Mrs. Petrecca decided the time had come to make the decision and the plunge. She has never regretted. Opening her shop was easy. "It's easy to buy", says this energetic little person, "when you are doing the buying, but selling-well that is something." Hard work, learning the art of making corsages, whipping up attractive window displays were all to be learned and Juliet Petrecca studied from scratch. Not only did Mrs. Petrecca satisfy herself that she had done the right thing but she convinced Mr. Petrecca to such an entent, that he too entered the field, but as a wholesaler only. Mr. Petrecca handles his business, right from the grower to the retailer. "Do you ever buy from your husband" we ventured, "Oh, yes, I buy roses from him she replied. MRS. PETRECCA -Pilkington Photo
