Buddy Weissel President of Citizens' Committee

William J. (Buddy) Weissel, Coral Gables attorney, was elected president of the Coral Gables Citizens' Committee Tuesday. Weissel won over Adam G. (Lep) Adams, who automatically became vice president. The organization also took a vote and went on record against the McLeod amendment to the Metro Charter. Unopposed for secretary was William L. Gale, and for treasurer, Miss Connie Arnaz. Outgoing president William H. Merriam automatically became a director. Six other directors were elected. They are Bernie Blanck, Carl H. Blohm, Robert M. Brake, Tom P. Caldwell, James W. Rankin and C. D. Van Orsdel. The new president is a graduate of the University of Miami undergraduate and Law Schools. While at the University, he was named to Iron Arrow, highest men's honorary on campus and to ODK, national leadership fraternity. He has been active in local political and civic affairs since his graduation. The Weissel's live at 6650 SW 124th St.

False Suicide Call Nearly Claims Life of an Officer

A Coral Gables policeman on his way to a false suicide call had a narrow brush with death early Saturday afternoon when his patrol car smashed into a tree after being hit by another car. The officer, Martin Patrick Ryan, 33, of 1426 South Dixie Hwy., suffered rib injuries in the collision. The car's seat belt was credited by City Manager L. W. Robinson Jr. with saving Ryan from serious injury or worse. Ryan was southbound on Granada Boulevard with siren howling and light flashing when he was struck by Melvin James Robinson, 63, of 9900 Pan American Dr., Cutler Ridge. Robinson, according to Gables police, was westbound on Blue Road and came through the intersection without seeing or hearing the police car. The impact spun the cruiser around and smashed it backwards into a banyan tree. Estimated damage to the city vehicle is $800 and $250 to the Robinson car. No charges were filed.
