Riviera Day School Has Gables in Court
The owners of a private school which lost its tax exemption this year have filed suit in Circuit Court to force the City to grant the exemption. Mr. and Mrs. Lorin E. Coppock Jr., who operate as well as own Riviera Day School at 6800 Nervia St., filed the suit. More than $3,000 in present and back taxes is involved. The city's action touched off a controversy between the Coppock, Tax Assessor T. C. Blount and City Attorney Ted Semple. The City contends that the Coppocks lost their exemption when they separated technical ownership from operation by incorporating. Other institutions which had been under question by the tax assessor, such as Deerborne School, 311 Sevilla Ave., Doctors' Hospital and University of Miami fraternities, were later cleared and granted the exemption by the City Commission.
Barge Canal Talked Here
The proposed cross-state barge canal was subject of a three-hour conference at the home of C. Frank Shaw Jr., president of the Florida Chapter of the American Society of Sanitary Engineering, Friday. Shaw, plumbing inspector for the City of Coral Gables, conferred with Tom Adams, secretary of State, and Senator Randolph Hodges, director of the Board of Conservation.

10th Annual Firemen's Ball Will Be Held on Oct. 20
Coral Gables firemen are going to have themselves a ball — and if all the invited show up they'll be hanging from the chandeliers. More than 1,200 invitations have gone out for their annual affair set for Oct. 20 at the Coral Gables Country Club. The ball will cap Fire Prevention Week, held the week before from Oct. 8-14. "Miss Coral Gables Flame," being picked this week, will reign over the various activities, including a downtown parade Oct. 7. The parade will be the cooperative project of the entire southwest area, with Kiwanis Clubs sponsoring. South Miami, West Miami, Homestead, Homestead Air Force Base, Metro and Miami will have equipment and floats in the parade, which will be led by the Coral Gables department. Rescue operation demonstrations at the Veterans Administration Hospital will be a highlight of the prom program, according to Chief Paul Matheson. Firemen will be lowered from the upper floors of the hospital to the ground using belts and rope and a dummy patient will be lowered by stretcher. School drills and evacuation will also be conducted during the "Prevention" week and a home to home inspection will be held in the high hazard residential districts.
