Something Popping All Year At U of M's Lowe Art Gallery

The Joe and Emily Lowe Art Gallery, which will celebrate its 10th anniversary at the University of Miami this season, has scheduled a busy program. The Eleventh Annual Florida Craftsmen's Exhibition, scheduled from Oct. 8 through Oct. 29, will open the season, according to Director C. Clay Aldridge. Sixty-five craftsmen have submitted entries in the field of ceramics, enamels, glass, metals, sculpture, textiles and woods. Twenty-six Florida communities will be represented. The Samuel H. Kress Collection of European Old Masters, will be shown to the public Nov. 16 after invitational showings Nov. 14-15. Another collection opening at the same time will be contemporary paintings from the permanent Lowe collection. Kress Wing Opening Set For Middle of November

The formal invitational opening of the Kress Wing of University of Miami's Joe and Emily Lowe Art Gallery will take place on Nov. 14. The new wing will be shown to community leaders on the 15th and to UM students and the public on the 16th. The Kress Wing will house the 18th and last donation from the famous collection of chain store magnate Samuel H. Kress of New York. The building itself was made possible through gifts from Mrs. Ione Staley Bisso and Joe and Emily Lowe. There are 41 pieces in the collection which includes painting and sculpture from such 16th, 17th and early 18th century artists as Jordans, Krespi, Tintorello, Guardi, Robia, Vammi, DiCredi, Correggio, Cranachi and DelSarto. The main and most valuable pieces from the Kress collection are in the National Art Gallery in Washington, D.C. The addition of the Kress collection to the Lowe Gallery's permanent display brings the total value of UM's art collection to over $2 million. The summer showing of contemporary art from the collection of Mr. and Mrs. S. J. Levin and French Impressionistic from the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Weissman will continue until Oct. 29. From Oct. 8 until the 29th there will also be a Florida Craftsman's display.
