WORKING ON LE JEUNE road is tough work. So when it's time for a man to sit down to eat his well-deserved lunch on a sweltering day, he's likely to look for shade. Here are two burly constructioneers who took refuge under this leafy tree. That's their machine behind them. (Staff Photo).

Publix Delay Gives Public Free Parking

Delay in start of construction on the new Publix Super Market on the old Youth Center site is fouling up the City's use of its attendant parking on Andalusia Avenue off Miracle Mile. The lot, owned by James Sottile, had been used for off-street parking in a tax forgiveness arrangement with the City and county. But Sottile recently notified the City on 30-days' notice that the property had been leased to Publix and asked that parking be eliminated. But cars continue to park there. This has upset the City's plans for use of the attendant lot. The great expected influx of cars has failed because of the free use of the Sottile lot, the city manager indicated. The city manager has been instructed to look into the problem. Meanwhile, the City is buying the $4,000 parking ticket dispensing machines leased for the lot. A balance of $2,200 is owed.

Biltmore Open For '62 Still in Air

A fourth Coral Gables Open Golf Tournament at Biltmore Golf Course in 1962? The decision hasn't been made by the City Commission yet, but there appears to be enough sentiment to indicate that the joint Professional Golf Association — City of Coral Gables sponsored event will take place. A final decision has been put off until the Commission meets with PGA officials to discuss contract renewal. Meanwhile, a loss of more than $3,000 has been reported for last year's tourney. This compares with a reported loss of $4,681 the previous year and $11,767 the first year. Tourney chairman John M. Montgomery had indicated earlier that the tourney might break even for the first time this year. The gross cost of putting on the tourney was $38,100. Patrons' tickets at $150 each raised $22,500 and all but $3,100 was made up by concessions and admission tickets. Not included in the costs of putting on the tourney were departmental costs — labor donated by the City, and cost of closing the Biltmore Golf Course to general play. One of the problems facing the Commission will be replacing Montgomery, who has indicated he will not be available to run the tourney this year. Another problem will be settlement of the question of who is to be paid and not paid for working for the tourney. This was the source of internal dissension among City employes last year.
