Gables Was Told About Grand Avenue Plan
By MAURICE LABELLE Times Reporter Miami's plan to widen Grand Avenue in Coconut Grove shouldn't have come as such a jolt to Coral Gables, Miami and Metro officials said this week. Coral Gables City Commissioners were surprised last week when they learned for the first time that Miami was planning the widening project and asking Coral Gables to participate by widening its stretch of Grand to South Dixie Highway. Widening of the avenue from 30 and 45 feet to 70 feet for approximately 1,200 feet would cost the Gables an estimated $200,000. Miami City Manager Melvin Reese said this week that he had been in touch with City Manager L. W. Robinson Jr. several weeks ago and had received no objection from him. Robinson, he said, had pointed out that the City planned sewers in the area. According to Don Petit, assistant to County Manager Irving McNayr, the county has a copy of a letter dated Dec. 19 from Reese to Robinson outlining the Grand Avenue proposal and asking for the Gables' cooperation. Robinson said Tuesday that he had received the letter before the Commission went on Christmas holidays and had it scheduled for the Jan. 5 conference meeting. But the matter did not come up at that meeting and was delayed until last week's meeting, Robinson said. Meanwhile, Coral Gables has asked the County to take over the project. The avenue is not now a county-maintained thoroughfare. McNayr has asked for a report from the County Public Works Department on the proposed project, part of which was conceived by Miami and under contract since July of last year. Miami originally planned to widen only that portion of Grand Avenue from Douglas Road east, but a group of citizens asked the City to extend the project westward to the Gables City limits. This led to the request for Coral Gables' participation because of the bottleneck that would result at Brooker Street, where the City of Miami ends and the Gables begins.
