Cavaliers Warm Up Our Baby Bouncing
The football's tucked away. The basketball's taking its own swishes through the net. Now's the time for track as our Gables High crew warms up. Work is rolling along on the $3,000 track. The end result: the best high school track in the state and second best only to the University of Florida. TAKING THINGS in stride, naturally, is Gables High half miler Hoz Compton, as he sweeps down the track. The 17-year-old lives at 1101 Sorolla Ave. WITH A 'SWOOSH' written on his face, Gables High hurdler Bill Shanor kicks his leg high and sweeps out his arms as he comes sailing across. The 17-year-old lives at 528 Savona Ave. THE HUMAN EAGLE is Coral Gables High pole vaulter Allan Pither, 17, of 1 S. Prospect Dr. He's pictured here, one hand jutting out, as he begins his descent. And Sketch for the Future Under the Friendship Tree These Brownies Think Hard
With pencils in hand, and sketchbooks in their laps, 16 Brownies of Troop 203 sat down in front of the Friendship Tree to draw it Wednesday of last week. This is the tree that was planted in the early 1930's at Granada Boulevard and Castile Avenue in soil from the 50 states, the Philippines and Cuba. And these are the Brownies who are preparing for the Scouts' annual "Thinking Day" Feb. 22. By drawing this tree which stands as a symbol of world-wide friendship, the Brownies hope to understand better the purpose of Thinking Day, a time, when Girl Scouts pause to reflect on the need for greater friendship among all peoples. Troop leaders who helped the girls in their sketching were Mrs. Gladys Schiller, 460 San Servando Ave., and Mrs. Dorothy Kilpatrick, 601 Santurce Ave. Mrs. Schiller's 17-year-old daughter and a senior at Coral Gables High, Donna, instructed the Brownies the week before on how to draw a tree. Brownies who took part in the project were Linda Aidman, 8325 SW 48th Ave.; Bethany Boerma, 7345 SW 55th Ave.; Pat Kilpatrick. 601 Santurce Ave.; Pam Helmuth, 7620 SW 55th Ave. Brooke Heppinstall, 7310 SW 47th Ave.; Sherry Melin, 6675 Riviera Dr.; Sally Long, 7236 SW 52nd Ave.; Alison Miller, 1531 Zoreta Ave.; Robin Pomerantz, 1121 Manati Ave. Mary Porter, 7521 SW 53rd Ave.; Jill Roth, 911 Hardee Rd.; Debbie Salkoff, 450 Tivoli Ave.; Sandra Schiller, 460 San Servando Ave. Stephanie Schultz, 5835 SW 81st St.; Jacie Vloedman, 7421 SW 53rd Pl.; and Linda Ward, 5721 Riviera Dr. THIS LITTLE GAL goes about her pleasant chore of putting the tree on paper. Peeking over her arm is an admirer, who took time out from her own drawing board. SEATED IN FRONT of the Friendship Tree as they sketch it are some of the 16 Brownies who took part in the project.
