Chamber Asks City to Forget a Debt; Amount Is $5,500
(Editorial on page 4) The Chamber of Commerce has asked the City to forget a $5,500 debt still owed on the Chamber building. Commissioners Monday decided to defer making a decision on the request until budget time. The Chamber has been in default on its $108.50 monthly payments for the past several months. Chamber Manager Lee Smith blamed lack of funds for the request to forgive the payments. Sith pointed out that the Chamber put in $10,400 in capital improvements to the present building, much more than had been anticipated. The Chamber had budgeted $1,700 of its $30,000 budget for re-payment of the loan, Smith said, but ran short of funds. It received an additional $4,600 in subsidies from the City last year and $2,000 from bus advertising. Coral Gables bought the present Chamber site for a parking lot back in 1959. The purchase included the delapidated restaurant building which was converted into a Chamber building. The Chamber had been located in another municipally owned building in the 200 block of Aragon Avenue until Jan. 1960. That building was torn down to create a unified parking lot.
