Is UM Path Cleared Now For Phi Beta Kappa Unit?
By TONI STROBINO Correspondent "By 1964 possibly, the University of Miami hopes to have a Phi Beta Kappa chapter on campus," says Dr. J. Ben Stalvey, UM professor of government and president of the Phi Beta Kappa alumni in Miami. "The determination is made by the Phi Beta Kappa Association, a national liberal arts honorary, which reviews various colleges every three years," he said. The last time the University of Miami was considered was in 1958. The university was rejected because it failed to meet the requirements. Dr. Stalvey mentioned that four years ago when Phi Beta Kappa inspected, the university did not have a central library and the endowment lacked sufficient funds for so large a school. The endowment fund established the financial stability of the university, this is why Phi Beta Kappa is so concerned about having the requirement met. "The completion of a new library was made this year with funds from Otto G. Richter," he said. "Richter gave $6 million to the university of which $3 million was used to complete the library. The rest of the money was added to the endowment fund." Dr. Stalvey went on to say that another reason for rejection was that the arts and sciences college was not considered a true liberal arts university. Admission requirements still accepted vocational courses, considered unrelated to liberal arts subjects. Vocational courses include journalism and home economics subjects. "The university might now be acceptable because of the installation of a university college which requires all students to take liberal arts courses for two years. "The removal of the home economics department because of lack of sufficient funds to keep running, will be a help in meeting the requirements of the Phi Beta Kappa association," said Dr. Stalvey. Dr. H. Franklin Williams, vice president for community affairs, said that the difficulty with requirements of Phi Beta Kappa is that an adjustment of policy would cut service to some students. "In other words, we might have to reject a student because of one vocational course on his high school record." Another complaint Phi Beta Kappa had against the University of Miami was that too many scholarships were going to athletes and not enough to academic scholars. This policy has been changed as athletic scholarships now do not exceed 10% of the school population. "The University of Miami has met many of the requirements of the Phi Beta Kappa association, said Dr. Stalvey. The results of efforts to improve will be seen in 1964."
