Dignity And Beauty...Keynote At Riverside

Discreet beauty is the keynote of the Riverside Memorial Chapel at SW 37th Ave. and 17th St., newest in the South Florida organization which has become widely known and respected for its pace-setting policies in the decoration and atmosphere of funeral homes. Completed last July at a cost of $250,000, the Riverside chapel is a tribute to the company's belief that dignity and respect do not have to be restricted to rooms of black and gray and stark white. The Douglas Road chapel has departed from that colorless, depressing theme, and yet remains within the bounds of good taste and propriety. It is quietly colorful, with gentle tones of beige, cocoa and copper in the trim, while walls are done in soft whites, lavendars and emerald greens. The latter is the motif in the chapel, for example, and this room is set further apart from the old-fashioned ideas by use of a glass wall behind the pulpit. Back of the glass is a profusion of living green plants. Reposing rooms at the southwest chapel are decorated as tastefully as the living room in a private home, with hand-painted Oriental flower murals on the walls and the most comfortable furniture, gracefully arranged to provide convenience for family and friends during visits to the chapel. Locally owned, the Riverside Memorial Chapel was created especially to please those who, when they require its services, should have to give no thought whatever to external things. Thus, the natural stones and glass, the grass wall hangings, the soft rock garden with its gently flowing water, all lend themselves to the soothing of troubled hearts, inspiring a mood of quiet relaxation and meditation. Many of the decorative innovations at the Riverside chapel were created by famed interior designer Roz Mark, from ideas conceived by the late Irving Blasberg, who was head of the Riverside chain here before his untimely death last year. His son, Larrie S. Blasberg, is funeral director at the chapel, and is stepping into his father's place in direction of the organization. Abe Eisenberg a South Floridian for many years, is treasurer of Riverside Memorial Chapels and one of the main planners in creation of the new building. Leonard Zilbert, executive director, moved here recently from New York City and is active in management and planning for the expansion program which Riverside is now undergoing. General Manager of the 37th Ave. chapel is Arthur Zweigenthal, a 20-year resident of Miami and long-time executive with Riverside. A native New Yorker, he also is active here in civic and fraternal organizations. Not only the interior of Riverside's new chapel has been done in the modern style. Outside, it is landscaped with an Oriental motif and so designed that if it were not for the identifying sign, no one would imagine the building is a funeral home. And, with today's traffic conditions in mind, Riverside carefully provided a 100-car parking lot at the chapel. There are three other Riverside Memorial Chapels in this area; one, at Normandy Isle, was modernized and enlarged two years ago. Another, on Alton Road at 20th St., will be reconstructed this spring, and the third is on Washington Ave. at 12th St., Miami Beach. Discreet beauty is the keynote of the Riverside Memorial Chapel, S.W. 37th Ave. and 17th St., newest is the South Florida organization which has become widely known and respected for its pace-setting policies in the decoration and atmosphere of funeral homes.
