Smoke Signals
By Paul Brick A very tired Scouting volunteer, District Camping Chairman Ben T. Burnham, 11350 SW 43rd Terrace, today gave [?cre?][TEXT LOST]dit for a very successful goodwill project good turn to the leaders of some 40 troops, packs and explorers units in the South Dade district. Ben, who spent many evenings recently lining up areas, units and arranging with Jaycee Club members for truck assignments, was sitting back at home after arranging for the next program, a district out swim meet. Bill Stanley, and Tom Greenway of Gables Legion Post are working with Jack Ott, Miami pool supervisor, in lining up events for the coming swim meet to be held at Curtis Park Pool on Saturday evening May 20. The Coral Gables Kiwanis Club will present a beautiful trophy to the winning troops d awards to Scout swimmers. ★ ★ ★ Scouts who are advancing to the top ranks of Star Scout Life Scout and Eagle Scout ranks will appear before a "Character Court" to be held on Tuesday, May 2, at St. Mark's Lutheran Hall, Bird Road and Le Jeune, according District Advancement Chairman John Barrett. A board of area Scouters will review the progress of these Scouts in service, leadership growth and in their example of meeting their religious duties, in meeting the motto of Scouting this year to "Strengthen America-Character Counts." ★ ★ ★ The Cub Scout theme "Indian Country," will be demonstrated in packs and dens of the South Dade district this month. Many Cub Scouts are busy working on Indian crafts, Indian dancing, and learning more about the first inhabitants of America, as they meet weekly in neighborhood dens. At their monthly pack meetings they will demonstrate their skills before their parents and be awarded badges they have earned. ★ ★ ★ Scouters under the leadership of George Scott, district chairman, and sustaining program chairman Arthur Lunden, are working to secure additional funds to meet the needs of the Scout Council and to continue services for this year. Parents have been contributing beyond their United Fund gifts, in order to meet the needs, and many people and business firms have been contributing in order to help Scouting. A leading United Fund volunteer has stated recently that "the United Fund did not let Scouting down — but a large number of Dade Countians have let the United Fund down." So it has been necessary for the local council to operate this effort to meet Scouting's needs. ★ ★ ★ A new member of the Scouting family, the Southwest Methodist Church Men's Club, is now forming a Boy Scout Troop. A recent father-son program took place at the men's club headed up by Bill Prothro.
