What's to Stop 74-Year-Old From Getting Degree? Nothing
By JIM FELDMAN Correspondent Some students can't wait to graduate, but not Roy Earl Miller, a 74-year-old gentleman with one ambition — to get as many degrees as possible. Just two months ago, Miller graduated from the University of Miami. But one degree didn't seem to be enough so now Miller can still be found on the campus taking courses which he hopes will lead to his admittance into graduate school in September, and a master's degree in history. Coming to Miami from Rochester in 1953, Miller started eating breakfast by himself on the student union prome- The energetic Miller is usually an early bird on campus about 6:45 every morning, ed attending classes on the advice of his former employer, president of a university in Rochester. After graduating from high school "way back when," according to Miller, he went to work in the banking field and eventually became an auditor and state examiner. He came to Miami after retiring. Majoring in history and minoring in philosophy, Miller finally earned his bachelor of arts degree after seven years. nade overlooking the lake. "There's nothing so beautiful as a Miami sunrise. It seems like the whole world's at peace and everybody's got a friend," he said. At present most of his time is spent in answering the more than 200 congratulatory telegrams he received after graduation. And how were your grades? "Pretty good," he said. He failed to mention he graduated Cum Laude. A bachelor, Miller was born in the little town of Cherry Creek, N.Y. He now lives at the Biscayne Plaza Hotel.
Bla-a-a-m!
A Miracle Mile merchant had a close call Friday night when a shotgun he was unloading accidently discharged into the floor, injuring his thumb. William W. Blonde, 53, owner of Cency's shoe store, 293 Miracle Mile, said he was trying to unload the single barrel, 12-gauge shotgun in the back of the store when it went off shortly before 7 p.m. Blonde was given emergency first aid by members of the Gables Fire Department.
