Monkeys Beat Rats at UM In Giving Boost to Science
By GAIL MARSHALL Correspondent Monkey business at the University of Miami School of Medicine may someday save a life. Pygmy marmosets are being imported from South America for experimental use in the university's research laboratories. These small monkeys will do away with many problems caused by the use of rodents for most testing projects. The marmoset, which is about the size of a laboratory [?]t offers resemblances to in which the rodents are lacking. Several hundred are now in Miami, and it is hoped that they will eventually breed in captivity. The school's research department handles some 200 different programs, most of which are designed to help you lead a longer and healthier life. Testing is being done in the field of gerontology, the study of old age and its diseases. One project involves a "living laboratory" of humans in the study of the sociological and psychological aspects of aging. Elderly patients of the regular Jackson Hospital clinics are examined by a team of men in the fields of ciology, psychology and edicine. The project involves some 80 patients ranging in age from 72 to 105. One is added every week, and none are dropped until death. Testing includes the relationship of illness in aging, the factor of loneliness and the effect of nutritional habits. The presence on the campus of two strains of laboratory ts inbred for 60 or more generations to some interesting speculations in longevity. The Pygmy Marmoset Clowns It Up ... helping tell scientific secrets One strain normally lives about 14 months, the other almost twice as long. The rats are being studied in a metabolism-testing apparatus, in activity cages, and in many other ways to determine whether people live longer when they are active or whether survival is better in the more inactive individual. Why do some cells of the body live for the lifetime of the person while others die in a short time? Why are some cells irreplaceable while others, as in the skin or blood, live, die, and are replaced by the same kind of cell? What happens to the cells of an old animal in a young host, or vice versa? The departments of physiology, biochemistry, together with microbiologists, botanists, zoologists and others, are seeking to answer some of these basic questions on the aging process within the cell. The difference in the skin cells of men and women has long been known, but only recently have the experimenters been able accurately to measure them. Other studies are being made involving the elasticity and secretions of the skin. It has been shown that unexposed skin does not age in the same way as skin which is not protected by clothing. The UM School of Medicine is in the process of expanding its research programs among medical students, Latin American students and physicians, and among graduate students in the basic medical sciences. In less than nine years of growth, the research department has acquired funds of close to four million dollars. This money is working for your health and happiness.
