South Miami Roundup with Ed Knight

NOTES OF A returning vacationer — It's nice to get back to Miami, but much nicer to get away from it . . . During the past two weeks I have traveled extensively throughout the state and I for one am beginning to realize that Miami is not particularly the best place in the state to live. FLORIDA'S West Coast is positively beautiful. It's got everything Miami doesn't have and is destined to be the vacation capital of the state. The middle of the state is rapidly filling up, as is the upper east coast. THINK MIAMI is the only location in Florida with expressways? Don't you believe it. There's a toll-free expressway being constructed all the way from Orlando to Tampa and it's half completed already. It saves hours of travel time and is heavily traveled by the large number of people going between Tampa and Orlando. I'LL SAY ONE thing for Miami, though. It's one of the coolest places in Florida. The temperature reached more than 100 degrees in Orlando while I was there and there is little breeze . . . wherever I went, people asked about the Cuban situation here. What are you going to say? Sure, there are more than 100,000 exiles here, but they haven't taken over the county, yet. THE FIRING of Miami City Manager Melvin Reese got a big play in the St. Petersburg papers . . . the reason: St. Petersburg booted out its city manager on the same day Miami fired Reese . . . one of the more popular and, in my opinion, by far the best places throughout the state to eat are Morrison's Cafeterias. There's at least one in most every city and lines start forming early and continue until closing time. * * * THERE ARE shopping centers galore not only in the bigger cities but in every little hamlet. Sure, they're hurting the downtown shopping districts, just as they are in Miami. Guess Miami is not the only place having its troubles along these lines. BOATS? THEY'RE all over the state. Every boatbasin, lake (and there are thousands in the middle of the state) bayou and inlet is filled with boats. Every fourth car on the highway is pulling a boat and the owners seems to have little trouble locating a place to put the boats in. * * * ROADS — they're getting better all the time through the state, but around Lake Okeechobee is still the worst stretch . . . the Florida Turnpike saves a lot of time, but it still cost about $2.40 to go from here to Ft. Pierce . . . The West Coast is like the East Coast was about 10 years ago. The growth is so rapid, you can't tell where one town stops and another town begins. ONE OF THE most disgraceful sights on our trip was the view as one comes into Miami via route 27. One sees nothing for several miles but shacks, trash and filth and this is the first impression of Miami to thousands of tourists who travel down to Miami through the middle of state. The tourists, for the most part, have just driven through such pretty little towns as Lake Wales Sebring and Avon Park. When they get to Miami, the first thing they see is a dump heap. The first impression is the most lasting, they say. * * * NUFF SAID about my journeys to nowhere. Since returning home, it's catching up we have done, in more ways than one. The grass has been cut, watered and edged. I've taken the two-week stack of Miami Heralds and found out just what has transpired since I last heard the paper pound our front door. If the Herald isn't the most complete newspaper in the state, certainly it's the biggest. YES, THE controversies are still raging. The people are sick of Metro. But yet, the dailies are still trying to tell us of the pitfalls of the McCleod amendment. I had almost forgotten about the referendum slated Oct. 17 on whether or not to abolish Metro. Apparently no one knows how the populace will vote, but from what I read, Metroites are worried. AND THEN, there's the reassessment program. It has gone to court now, from the latest dailies. And County Manager McNayr, on the witness stand, says the reassessment program was unsound in itself. McNayr further states that Metro should have taken five and not just 21⁄2 years to reassess all the property in Dade County to full cash value. WELL NOW, isn't that something. It boils down to the fact that Metro in reality didn't have a reassessment program at all, but a bill-of-goods that was sold to Dade Countians as a program to bring every piece of property to its rightful place in the tax program. COUNTY MANAGER McNayr said that shortly after he took up his present duties in May he found numerous errors in reassessments, there was no recheck of valuations by a qualified appraiser a there was no physical check of property to ascertain new valuations.
