THE PATIENTS:
Doctor and wives exhibiting art at the Dade County Physicians Art Association Second Annual Art Exhibit. THE SYMPTOMS: Terrible urge to paint — desire to take out frustrations on canvas. THE DIAGNOSIS: Most of the works are very sick . . . with little hope for recovery. Some of the works are very good and shall endure. The purpose of this show is worthwhile; the interest in art displayed by the Doctors and Mrs. Doctors is admirable; the usefulness of the arts as pastimes by them is enviable. The exhibit, however, is faulty in its visual presentation and the absence of productivity by the doctors themselves. The wives are represented with almost as many works as the men. Don't attend this show looking for medical subjects or deep psychological interpretations in paint. Most of the work is the nice, every-day scene. The paintings and sculpture of Dr. Wilfred Lansman would be show stoppers in any exhibit. His "Creature 11 & 12" rendered by enamel spray painting produce an erie facial expression effects. His depth perception in painting and human insight are artistically expressed. His sculpture in metal is dynamic and reaches for emotional contact at once. Lansman's works at this show are the most noteworthy and original. We'd like to see more. A special note of praise is in order to Mrs. Jean Emil for her plaster bas-relief sculpture, "Physician Struggling With Death and Life." The drama is created by the figure of a doctor, fully gowned, firmly holding in one strong arm the nude female body of a helpless patient. The other arm is forcefully pushing away a lurching skeleton from its attempted death symbol grasp. Here's the everyday drama our doctors face, boldly, dynamically and diabolically illustrated by Jean Emil. Technically the works of Dr. Jacob A. Glassman are good. His Oriental scenes and their influence are displayed in good painting order. "The Sculptor" by Dr. William M. George gives a doctor's insight into the anguish of life. Use of simple academic color in this case is effective. Mrs. Iris Rich, with intensive color and swift brush strokes, makes her "Native Dancer" painting come alive with rhythm. Most of the works are subject producing and don't leave you in doubt. There's no blatant non-objective and very little abstract. I'd really like to see some of the works that are in the closets. I'm sure many MD's have plastic art commentaries on the patient world that would be knockouts. This show is an interesting commentary in that the people who call artists sick, find that the doctors who make "them" well, are artists themselves. By Robert S. Hurwitz

Fashion Added To UM 3 R's
It used to be that you could usually tell a University of Miami student from the natives, but it may be more difficult from now on. UM officials have issued instructions for students to formalize their wear. Gone are shoes of thongs, the short-shorts, the toreador pants, dungarees and swimming trunks. Hencsforth, shirts will be tucked in and shoes will be the uniform of the day. Shorts, when permitted, will have to be no shorter than two inches from the knee. "No penalties have been drawn up," said Assistant Dean of Men Phillip Campbell, who preferred to call the new dress regulations a code. Campbell indicated that violations of the code will be handled on an individual basis, with erring students called in to talk over their individual fashion problem. Dean of Women May Brunson was unavailable for comment, but her office indicated that they were still working on the details of enforcement for UM coeds. Actually, coed dress has always been closely regulated by the Dean of Women's office. The change is aimed primarily at male students whose informal attire sometimes raised the official
