Cocktails For an Elevator

South Miami Hospital Women's Auxiliary will sponsor its first event for the fall, Sept. 8. The kick-off event, an elaborate cocktail party, will be held at 4810 San Amaro Drive, Coral Gables, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tickets may be obtained at the hospital or at the door. "This party," said Mrs. John Koval, auxiliary president, "will initiate the new year's program. We are striving to raise enough money to buy a new emergency elevator for the hospital. "The auxiliary has already contributed enough funds for the downpayment and hopes to make another substantial contribution this year, also."

TIMES By Robert S. Hurwitz

The Arts In a display of paintings held in New York by our state government for our state's finer artists, a painting was bought by a well-known lady patron of the arts. The sale of the work automatically brings recognition to the artist and honor to our art colony. More important, the lady in question should be applauded for keen judgment in perceiving new talent latent with explosive possibilities. The artist who painted: Tony Scornavacca. The patron with taste: actress, Joan Crawford. The Crafts If while driving on South Dixie Highway and 97th Avenue you are stopped by the glitter of jewels, gems, precious and semi-precious stones, you'll realize that something new and wonderful has happened to the South Florida scene. Started by men of dreams, American Gems and Minerals, Inc., opened this month to offer the hobbyst, collector and learner a new source of enjoyment. All I could do on my first trip was marvel at the natural beauty of the rocks from all over the world, at the semi-precious stones and at the precious gems of every description and color. George Hornick, one of the partners, whisked me around the numerous faceting machines and tumbling equipment with the explanation that classes will start for Cabashon and faceting students soon. This could be a pleasurable new hobby for nature lovers. The entry of this business to our local arts and crafts arena, can provide the adult and child alike with a new world of interest in the real beauty of nature. This field of crafts allows you to take nature in the raw and really improve upon it. If you insist hard enough, you'll be shown backroom stones before they are cut and polished that will incite your senses. A fortune in stones, gems, minerals and precious gems from the private collection of Glen H. McNev, president, are in view for your enjoyment. This column urges you to visit this newcomer at 9775 South Dixie Highway. They have spared little in opening our eyes to a lot of pleasure.

West of The City

of year when I like to write about football! * * * THINGS TO WATCH FOR: Gables Jaycees, led by president Frank Guilford, will fly to Hati over Labor Day; will be feted at a banquet given by the Haitian government while there . . . University of Miami chapter of Tau Epsilon Phi fraternity is planning a 25th anniversary reunion here in April . . . Road work will continie in the Gallow-Coral Way area for several more weeks — but despite rumors, no four-laning is in the immediate offing. Pro-Metro supporters are a little worried over the wording on the forthcoming ballot in October. If you want to support current Metro government, you'll have to vote NO. A YES vote would be in favor of the McLeod Amendment. And don't forget — as if it were possible — that school starts next week . . . Morris Fox, former president of Coral Way Jewish Center, chairmans a big dinner there Oct. 11 in behalf of Cedars of Lebanon Hospital.
