From the Garden Notes and Quotes
By Madelene Hawkins Self - sufficient succulents for your home—sounds like a commercial for a new type of wonder product; instead they can be interesting adjuncts to your present gardening hobby. If you don't have the time to water every day or have an airconditioned house they fit these conditions ideally. Succulents are drought-resistant plants that store large quantities of water in their thick stems or fleshy leaves. Although cacti are perhaps the best known of the succulent family, all succulents are not cacti. There are many in the amaryllis and lilly family, the tradescantias, the aloes and kalanchoes are all decorative and different. One of the highlights of the summer have been the Flower Arrangement Syposium and Horticulture lectures arranged by the Ken-Pines Garden Club. Among those in frequent attendance have been Mrs. Ken Thompson and Mrs. George Arnold of the Gables, Mrs. Anne Cotton and Mrs. Billie Haygood of Kendall. Mrs. Richard Robertson, South Miami and current president of the Metropolitan Flower Show, has really put all the program chairmen to scurrying around. A series of workshops are planned to make unusual Christmas arrangements and decorations to be sold at the Viscaya show in December. Be sure to save any dry plant material that could be used or start drying and saving interesting seed pods and leaves. For those who have just come back from vacation trips and are now the possessors of those souvenir china animals with a hole in their back, self sufficient succulents are waiting for them. Fill the interiors with about an inch of broken bits of pottery or gravel, a dry layer of soil is then laid down over the drainage and the plants are potted. Unlike other plants, succulents are never watered immediately after potting. The plants are allowed to remain fairly dry for several days and then watered sparingly until they have conditioned themselves in the backs of the hollow ceramic animals.
