"NOTES ON FOOT HEALTH" BY BERT ALBERT Shoe Consultant Junior SHOECRAFT

"NOTES ON FOOT HEALTH" BY BERT ALBERT Shoe Consultant "But, Mother, all the other kids wear them" . . . No, not all, but a growing percentage do follow the lowest common denominator - that needle-pointed, bunion-inducing corn-breeding fad shoe. Doctors, thoughtful parents, conscientious shoe fitters and observant teachers are much concerned and are keenly aware of the disastrous results of this freed. Traditional and new styles are being produced of rich leathers and Nylon velvets. They are smart, graceful, exceedingly long wearing and embody the most advanced orthopedic techniques. The wiser manufacturers of children's fine shoes did not invest heavily in these super pointed lasts. THERE ARE STILL EXCELLENT LASTS AVAILABLE. When you are next confronted with, "but, Mother, all the other kids, etc." project your thinking to the years ahead - to the proms, games, athletics - the adults who will surely want two good feet, and you will know the correct answer. The Mad Hatter's Waiting For Children

New students at Coral Reef Elementary School (7955 SW 152nd St.) have something to look forward to when they go back to school next week. Returning students will remember that there was excitement the final week of school when a scaffold went up in the school library and a stranger started drawing pictures on the east wall of the room. In four days, the surprised children saw the Queen of Hearts and the Mad Hatter appear from out of the pages of Alice in Wonderland, Christopher Robin and Winnie the Pooh step from A. A. Milne's classics, and finally a boatload of animal characters from Wind in the Willows complete a colorful mural of beloved children's books. Done in brilliant hues of turquoise and grey on the sea-foam green wall of the library, the mural was executed by Mrs. Joseph Stockhausen, 15920 SW 84th Ave., a graduate art major of the University of Miami. Patti, as she has signed the mural, painted the mural on the urging of a friend, Mrs. Robert Keyser, 8245 SW 150th Dr., who served as coordinator of the school's Library Mothers' Committee. In return for Patti's gift to the new Elementary school, Mrs. Keyser turned baby sitter for the artist's two preschool children while their mother worked at the mural. The mural climaxed an active program all last year by mothers at Coral Reef to make their new school's library an important adjunct to the school's academic program. Among the accomplishments of the Library Committee was the staffing of the library by mothers five days a week to assist the aims and teaching program of their Librarian, Mrs. Betty Bassett. Coral Reef and Perrine Elementary Schools shared the services of Mrs. Bassett who served at Coral Reef just two days a week last year.

Southwest High Receives Freedoms Honor Medal

Southwest Miami High School was the only school in Florida to receive the George Washington honor medal given by the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge at a special awards luncheon recently. The bronze medal showing George Washington at prayer at Valley Forge was presented for a schoolwide patriotic program developed around the theme "Educated Youth Strengthens Democracy." Students wrote and presented 82 scripts on patriotic holidays over radio station WVCG in Coral Gables. They wrote essays and poems about American patriots and events, made a special study of the school system and American government with original tapes and prepared posters. Editorials on Americanism were published in the school newspaper and an original musical presentation showed early American life. Dr. Kenneth D. Wells, president of the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge presented the medal to Dr. Lee A. Aber, principal. The schoolwide project was coordinated and compiled by Mrs. J. Riley Staats, English and journalism teacher, who had previously won the award for a similar program in West Miami Junior High School. Teachers who directed work on the project in other areas of study include Miss Agnes Crabtree, social studies chairman; Richar Kiibler, art; Marvin Mockabee, band director.
