Latins 'Saw' Coral Gables Just Last Fall

Coral Gables got a nice splash in the fall edition of the quarterly magazine Estados Unidos (United States). The magazine is edited by Alfredo Jarrin and published by Giltraval Publications. It is distributed by Pan American Airways to 30,000 upper-level families in the Spanish-speaking countries of South America. The double-page spread illustrated the Spanish-Italian architecture in City Hall and the DeSoto Fountain. Venetian Pool was shown with this caption: "the most beautiful swimming hole in the world."

First Professional Building Planned In SM Home Area

South Miami Council Tuesday night of last week paved the way for the erection of a two-story professional building in a residential area through the use of the city's new RU-5 zoning category. Council rezoned two lots and granted a special use permit for the use of a third lot as a parking lot in a tract in the 7500 block of Red Road. The building, to be constructed by South Shores Properties Inc., will include 18 to 20 professional suites and some 70 off-street parking spaces. The building will take four months to construct and be ready for occupancy in May. This is the first rezoning application received by the city under the city's newest zoning category. The rezoning was from RU-1 (single family) to residential - type professional buildings in residential areas. Final reading of an ordinance setting up the new zoning category was in November. In other action, Council: ACCEPTED the low bid of Munroe-Zeder, Inc., to furnish two 1962 Plymouth V-8 patroller sedans at a net cost of $2,686.62 to be used as police cars. VOTED DOWN a resolution to purchase the Talcott property at South Dixie Highway and Ludlam Road for use as a city garage. Council last month turned down a similar ordinance calling for the purchase by the city of three lots at the location for $175,000. Under the resolution the city would have purchased but two of the lots with an option on the third for $150,000.
