COUNTY LINE with Ed Knight

WEST DADE workers for the incorporation of that area have come up with some figures to use in their campaign to make a city of West Dade. Although the figures show little reason for incorporation, they do prove the magnitude of the area to be incorporated. THE FIRST figure is the most impressive. It is the number of square miles in the proposed incorporation. The figure is 13.3 square miles, which would put West Dade third in the rankings of Dade municipalities. And don't forget that the boundaries of the suggested city are only from 70th to 97th avenues east and west. IN ORDER of rank, Miami is first, Hialeah is second and the West Dade area is third. Coral Gables has but 12.2 square miles and South Miami only three square miles. HERE'S ANOTHER figure: Population-wise, West Dade, if incorporated, would rank fifth in the county. There are some 31,000 people living in the proposed West Dade boundaries, which ranks it directly behind Coral Gables in population. STILL ANOTHER figure: West Dade, if incorporated, would take in some $200,000 in cigaret taxes yearly, which otherwise has gone to the state for use in the state's general fund. * * * ARE YOU bothered by a noisy dog? Well, sir, under Metro's present control ordinance, you and you alone can do something about it. According to the ordinance, the dog need only disturb one person to become a nuisance in the eyes of the law. METRO JUDGE Jack Turner explained it this way: "The dog ordinance is unlike most anti-nuisance ordinances. Usually a nuisance has to be shown to be of general effect to be illegal. But with the dog ordinance, any person who is disturbed is entitled to relief." DOGS ARE dogs, let's face it. It is natural for dogs to bark, but for dogs to bark for no reason is senseless and obnoxious. A well-trained dog, alone or not, just doesn't bark. The need for attention, I've heard, is the primary reason for a barking dog. * * * BECAUSE of high school bands, South Miami Council is bitter toward the Dade County School Board and the Metro government. The two bands involved are the South Miami Junior High School Band and the Southwest High School band. HERE'S THE story: The city is mad at the school board because it wouldn't let the junior high school band play at the city's Turkey Bowl game Nov. 25. Yet the city fathers maintain that the junior high band was permitted to participate in a parade in Hialeah. THE TURKEY Bowl game was held on junior high property by mostly boys attending the junior high. The city maintains that is has gone out of its way for the school board by giving the land for the school and school playground. THE CITY is mad at Metro (again) because the county government permitted a Southwest High School homecoming parade through the city's streets during the height of the rush hour. The high school band was the dominant part of the parade which blocked up traffic on Sunset Drive and South Dixie Highway for blocks. EVERYONE thinks that South Miami issued the parade permit and plenty of motorists are sore at the city. But the city didn't issue the permit. Metro did and that's why the city is again angry at Metro.
