SW High Helping Needy
By JOY CHERRY Correspondent Many needy families will enjoy Christmas due to the combined efforts of the Student Council, homerooms, and various student organizations at Southwest Miami Senior High School. The collection of can goods, sugar, flour, cake mixes, and money began Monday in the homerooms, while other school groups are repairing toys for unfortunate children who will now believe in Santa Claus. With the monies gathered the Student Council will purchase food certificates which will be given to the families along with the non-perishable goods. Several stores have donated these certificates enabling the benefactors to turkey, chicken or ham which should complete their dinner. Some homerooms are filling baskets for individual families which have been selected for them by the Student Council. The woodshops, senior class, Student Council and TV history class will supply Christmas for large needy families Dec. 20 when the baskets will be delivered. Under the direction of Mrs. Helen Lephew, the committee of Winston Jones, Jerome Taft, Mrs. Betty Wade, Jay Luckett, Mrs. Frankie Weintraub, Myron Rice, Marvin Fields and student representative Russell Bizette are in charge of the entire project. Seniors on the Student Council committee are Chip Mirman, Scott Posner, Mark Kalish, Luke Crawford, Cheryl West, Kathy Russe, Juliette Heisser, Charles Cook. Patsye Doyle, and Sally Kitchin. Juniors are: Bill Esty, Robert Ledee, Donna Fouch and Rusty Smith. Sophomores are Karen Klein, Hariet Hamilton, Chris Uhle and Robert Kelley.
THESPIANS
The "hams" had their day Dec. 9 when Southwest's Thespians hosted the Southern Regional Thespian Conference in the school auditorium. Each school presented talent from its drama department by producing a play, monologue, or duo-scene. After the program, Mr. McElhaney, a dramatics critic from the University of Miami gave a critique for each presentation. Mrs. Lou McLean, the Southern Regional Director concluded the conference by awarding certificates to the best actor, actress, supporting actor and supporting actress.
Christmas Play Will 'Star' At Presbyterian Church
The Coral Terrace Presbyterian Church, 7355 Coral Way, is planning several Christmas programs. On Thursday, Dec. 21, 7:30 p.m., children will present a play entitled "Christmas Stars Around The World" which was written by Mrs. D. B. Tener. The children, ranging from three to 15 years of age, will wear appropriate costumes to depict how various countries celebrate Christmas. The program will be done in silhouette with the last scene, the Nativity, done in backlight. This is the reverse effect of silhouette and is achieved through the use of ultra-violet light. The play will be performed in a tryptyche frame. That is, the stage will be divided into three sections with just one lit at a time. Coral Terrace also plans a Christmas Service at 9:30 a.m. and a musical program at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 24th. Both the Junior and Westminster Choirs will sing and the public is invited to come worship with them. Choir Directors are Mrs. Vivian Smith and Miss Margaret Lasher.
