Journalism Text to Cite 'Lancer'

By JOY CHERRY Correspondent The Lancer, Southwest Miami High School newspaper, will have excerpts appear in a forthcoming journalism text. Copies of the Lancer were sent to Harold Spears, superintendent of public schools, San Francisco, at the request of Dr. Joe Hall, Dade County superintendent. Spears airmailed back a request for three copies of the September and October issues saying, "you have an outstanding high school paper and I want to take full advantage of it in my forthcoming high school journalism text that I am now preparing for publication." ★ ★ ★ Original student Christmas poems will be presented with musical background over Station WVCG during the holiday season. James Clark and Jane Shryer from creative writing class, taped the poems. Poems read are written by Barbara Nabutovsky, Jo Ann Myer, Elliot Prenner, Sherri Hirsch, Claire Moniz, Dianna Mills, Diane Poole, Jan Glidewell and Rachel Gebhardt. PROSE PUBLISHED Fifteen authors will receive recognition when their essays appear in the annual student prose anthology, "Young America Speaks." The 150-word essays were written and selected from thousands submitted from high schools in Southeastern United States. Writers from Edward C. Garvin's English classes are Donna Lowry, Kaye Sargent, Joanne Glass, Margaret Lee, Lynne C. Rienner, and Rachel Gebhardt. Eilene Apple in the creative writing class taught by Mrs. Mabel M. Staats has a poem being published for the second time. Others are Frances Chommie, Linda Prusoff, Stanley Folker, and Barbara Nabutovsky. Rosalind Hill, Michele Levine and Karen Klein are from Mrs. Pamela Lee's class, and John B. King is in Mr. Joseph Shaw's class. ELECTRICIANS WIRE Three Southwest Electronics students have built an electronic Christmas display, under the direction of their teacher, William Nelson. Roger Coon, Van Stokes and Frank Mays put many hours work into the 16' by 15' display. The scene is a village in which a train makes a full circuit, house lights go on and off, while four ice skaters twirl merrily around a realistic pond. Not without sound effects, the scene is accompanied by the train's whistle and a bell when the railroad crossing gate is lowered. The device is activated merely by touching the glass front of the display case. SINGERS ALL-STATE A number of Southwest students were chosen for the all-state chorus at the state Music Clinic tryouts Dec. 6. Among those selected for the All-State Chorus were; Peggy Tillotson, Karen Chambers, Frances Newman, Marty Ketchum, Diana Zacharias. Jo Ann Vineyard, Ann Reddish, Gary Bilyer, Richard Weigel, Barron Shields, Gordon Norbraten, Richard Lamb, Martin Andrews, and Robert Winsett. Alternates for the State Music Clinic which will be held in Miami in the spring are—Dee Falch, Lorna Doon and Jane Loulton. Selected for experimental chorus were — Dawn Pricht, Sue Schlein Michael Flynt and Jerry Richardson.

GOLFERS PRACTICE

With two returnees from last year's squad, Willard Harter and Richard Nichols, Southwest's golf team is working hard for the coming season. Coach Roger Griffin is depending on sophomores for this season. The golf team is in the Gold Coast Conference and will play its home games at Biltmore golf course. "We'll hold our own on our conference. We will be harder to beat on our own course," says Coach Griffen.
