Richards to Build Unit On Coral Way in April
A new two-story, multimillion dollar Richards department store is scheduled to get under way at Coral Way Shopping Center in April, according to Paul S. Walker, president. Richards has a long-term lease on the $1 million building and will spend an additional $1 1/4 million for furniture and merchandise, Walker said. The store, the fifth Richards in the Miami area, will be one of several large chain stores to join the Publix Supermarket at Coral Way and SW 87th Ave. Richards, located just east of Publix, will have a 2,100-car parking lot on the 27-acre plot. The building, whose second store will not be utilized for merchandizing immediately, will have 67,000 square feet of space. An additional 200,000 feet will be reserved for future building use. The Richards group of stores is affiliated with Maison Blanche in New Orleans; Kaufmans in Louisville; Lovemans in Birmingham; Lowensteins in Memphis; and the W. T. Sloan Co. Walker cited rapid growth in the area for the move. The store will be leased from Samuel T. Sapiro and Associates, which is planning to add a large drug store and several other businesses, including a J. J. Newberry variety store. Other Richards stores are located at Cutler Ridge, downtown Miami, 163rd Street Shopping Center and Lincoln Road Mall.
Newberry's Planning Store In Westchester Area
J. J. Newberry's with 500 stores in the United States will open a new store at the Coral Way Shopping Center, at 8420 Coral Way. The new chain will join Richards department store, an as yet unnamed drug store reported to be Walgreen's, Lerner shops, Tom McAn, National Shirts, Baker Shops and the already going Publix Supermarket. Newberry's, a five and 10 operation elsewhere, is going into the regular department store business here. The Newberry's store with 80,000 square feet of space, is the second to be constructed in South Florida. A second store is under construction in Fort Lauderdale. The building will be leased from the Coral Way Shopping Center, owned by Samuel T. Sapiro and Associates.

South Miami couples, Mr. and Mrs. W. Hayden Sparks, 9315 SW 61st Ct., and Mr. and Mrs. W. T. McBroom, 10203 SW 67th Ave., won 10 awards at the Orchid Show in the State Fair at Tampa and will exhibit in the International Orchid Show in Bayfront Park auditorium this Friday. The Sparkses won eight, the McBrooms, two. Each couple brought home awards of merit from the AOS as well as ribbons and trophies. * * * Marion Cosgrove says she doesn't know if she is in the business of selling the United States flag or doing her regular job as decorator. Seems she decorated the front of her place, 5843 Sunset Dr., South Miami, with an American flag, 3x5 on a pole, 48 inches tall, with a point at top and set in a socket in the ground. She takes it in at sundown. Before long, all business neighbors wanted to know where she got it — and now they are all patriotic. They say being a grandmother for the first time is exciting. So, Mrs. Charles W. Dabney, 12765 SW 69th Ave., is quite excited over the birth of her first grandchild, Kimberly Ann, born Feb. 13 at Doctors' Hospital. Kim is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Otto S. Dowlen Jr., of 3331 SW 22nd Ter. She weighed six pounds eight and one-half ounces. The Dabneys only recently moved to the southern part of Dade County, having lived for many years at 1238 Anastasia Ave. Mrs. Dowlen is the former Artha Gay Dabney. The baby's paternal grandparents are Dr. and Mrs. Otto S. Dowlen, 3711 Alhambra Cir. * * * Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Kuvin, 7318 SW 96th St., are the proud parents of a baby girl, Beth Ivy, by adoption. Beth Ivy, now seven-months-old, was just four-months-old when she became their child. The Kuvins hope to adopt two more. Mr. Kuvin graduated in law from the University of Miami in 1958. His wife, the former Sylvia Goldman, graduated in Arts and Science, class of '57. * * * Edward H. Baumgarten, 7261 SW 52nd Ct., was the recipient of a John Hay Fellowship in the Humanities-Summer Seminar, 1961 Colorado College. Baumgarten is a graduate of the University of Miami class of 1946. He resides at 7261 SW 52nd Ct.
