News From Westchester Miami Olympia Heights

GOT NEWS? CALL SHERRI HIRSCH CA 6-1189 Making parties can be almost as much fun as attending them. Paulette Marks, 5201 SW 89th Pl., and Irene Koffman, 7700 SW 90th Ave., cater birthday parties for children. These two successful "Party-makers" do everything from think up a theme for the party to bringing the cake, serving, playing games, and even cleaning up. They call their operation "Funtime Parties" and have made many parties in the Westchester area. All the mothers do is sit back and relax. The girls are only 13 years old but have been in business for quite a while. Today marks the birthday of a famous American, George Washington. Another great man in the Westchester area, also celebrates today as his birthday. Rev. Howard W. Lindstrom, 1801 SW 85th Ct., is pastor of the Messiah Lutheran Church and has lived in Miami for four years. Before moving to Florida, however, he was pastor of the Downtown Lutheran Church in California, Mr. Lindstrom has done much for Miami and we all wish him Happy Birthday. Who says the twist is just for teenagers? At a recent party given by Sydelle and Gene Bass, 1820 SW 85th Ct., Feb. 11, everyone was sore from doing it. The party was attended by many Westchester couples. Visiting Ruth and Marty Hirsch, 1701 SW 85th Ct., is their parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. Hirsch from New York. The latter Hirschs came for grandson Alan's Bar Mitzvah, March 10. Another birthday today is Mrs. Yvette Wisotsky, 10711 SW 52nd Ter. Happy Birthday, Yvette. March 4 is the date; Coral Way Jewish Center is the place; and "A Night With Patsye Abbott" is the event. The program which starts at 8:30 p.m. at the center will also include dancing and entertainment.

Red Cross Will Award Service Pins

Mrs. L. Gordon Walters, 501 Hardee Rd., is among the four American Red Cross volunteers who will receive their bars for 20 years of service at a recognition ceremony at chapter quarters March 5. Mrs. Walters is chairman of the Gray Lady service. Mrs. Rosemary Parish, 8020 SW 62nd Ct., chairman of recognition, invites the public to attend the ceremony where 300 volunteers will receive recognition for service to the community. Mrs. William Cox, 5737 Riviera Dr., co-chairman of the office of volunteers will help present the awards.

WEST of the City Limits with Ron Levitt

The southern half of Dade County continues to grow! Over the weekend Richard's Department Store announced that a lease has been signed for a new store on the southeast corner of Coral Way and 87th Avenue. The news was of little surprise to residents of the big Westchester area nearby. For months there has been rumors that Richard's had been "eyeing" the corner. However, along with the Richard's expansion move came news that J. J. Newberry will also construct a large store on the same corner. This was news. The latest word is that construction will begin on these stores sometime in April. This could well mean that South Dade shoppers will have two of the largest areas in Dade by the end of the year. Dadeland Shopping Center at the North Kendall Drive exit of the Palmetto Expressway is rapidly being built. The new shopping areas announced this week at 87th and Coral Way, combined with the Westchester Shopping Center and the Zayre's corner at the same intersection, makes this another of the big Dade County shopping areas. All this — and naturally Miracle Mile too — should give Southwesters a shopping selection which very few areas can boast. Land Going Up Too — It isn't only stores that are going up in South Dade, but land prices too! Now that Aerojet General's plant is definite, land holders in the Perrine and Homestead area have been jumping their acreage prices considerably. Reports over the past weekend showed landowners seeking 25 per cent to 50 per cent increases in the acreage prices they were asking just a few short months ago. Home building has also shown a notable increase — especially in newly started projects in the past month. The jump in land prices is nothing new to Dade — it seems to happen every few years. Now those guys who laughed at the people who bought land in the Homestead "boondocks" several yers ago will be wiping the smiles off their faces. It will probably take several years before the full impact of Aerojet and the new oil refinery and other new industries take hold in South Dade, but it's apparent that the anticipated arrival of industry has already left some mark! Early Run-off . . . Gables politicians are having a hearty laugh after hearing about the meeting between two expected candidates for the District One County Commission seat. It seems one of the candidates went to another candidate's office and told him if he lost in the primary, he would give his "full support" if a run-off became necessary. That's what you call under-confidence.
