LEX SMITH, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Smith, 1201 Sorolla Ave., was named "most improved 'player" on the soccer team at Denison University Granville, Ohio, this fall. A senior, Smith played halfback for the Big Red, earning his second letter.

AT HARLNNGEN AFB, Texas, where he is training in the Primary Basic Navigator Course is Aviation Cadet Anthony F. Finocchio. Scheduled to graduate from 38 weeks of intensified training next August, Cadet Finocchio is the son of Mrs. Rose Marie Caputo, 537 Navarre Ave.

AIRMAN Edwin S. Marshall, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin G. Marshall, 1125 SW 78th Ct., has completed his initial course of Air Force basic military training at Lackland AFB, Texas. He has been selected to attend the technical training course for Aircraft and Missile Maintenance at Sheppard AFB, Texas. Airman Marshall attended Southwest High School.

Gableite Helped Win Football Title In Korea

Army 1st Lt. John F. Smith, 24, son of J. Frank Smith, 4700 San Amaro Dr., is a member of the 1st Cavalry Division football team which recently won the Eighth U. S. Army championship in Korea. Lieutenant Smith, a platoon leader in Company E of the division's 8th Engineer Battalion, entered the Army in 1957 and arrived overseas last January. The lieutenant is a 1957 graduate of the U. S. Military Academy at West Point, N. Y.

Production Of 'Carousel' Is Big Hit With Students, Parents

By LESLIE GROSS The Coral Gables High School music department presented its version of Carousel last Friday night. For 75c, the audience was treated to fine performances by Marilyn Kaufman, Bill Brown, Pat Gabriel, Tanya Cox, Bill Gibbs and the rest of the department. Last Monday, the Gables High Interclub Council held its first meeting. The presidents of all the school clubs met with Mr. Byrd, director of student activities, to discuss questions of interest to all the organizations. The Gables varsity track team recently held its preliminary meeting for boys interested in competing in the varsity sport. Students signed up for events in which they wish to compete. Practice will get into full swing after the Christmas vacation with Gables hoping for another fine track season. Football Banquet Held The Senior and Junior Exchange Clubs last Thursday were hosts for the annual football banquet. Players, their families and invited guests were treated to a fine collation at the school cafeteria. Tribute was paid to the Gables High football squad for its fine 1960 showing. The Gables Student Council has undertaken two worthy projects this Christmas season. The Student Council has inaugurated a post office for delivery of Christmas cards at no cost. This year's service has been even better than last year's postal endeavor. Students deposited their cards at the auditorium commissary and Student Council carriers rushed them to eager recipients sitting anxiously in their homerooms. The Student Council also is sponsoring a community service project called Christmas Cubano. Students have been bringing in canned and other dried foods to brighten up the holiday season of some of our refugees in Miami. New Club Started Gables High is witnessing the formation of a new club, the name of which is Future Doctors of America. Sponsor, Mr. James Gleason, has been signing up interested students after school. The club proposes to meet with eminent doctors and learn more about the medical profession. Mr. Gleason and company hope to visit a local hospital as a project toward the end of the school year. The National Forensic League Calendar came out last week to the delight of Gables students. Credit should go to the following members of the staff: Co-editors-in-chief, Richard Schuster, Michael H. Sadler; assistant editors, B. B. Warren, William Brown; business manager, Steve Magida; co-fashion editors, Rosalyn Friedman and Charlotte Everett; advertising coordinator, Alan Dinsmore. Students participating in the Westinghouse Science Talent Search took the 2 1/2 hour qualifying exam last Monday. Results will be announced in February. A semi-formal dance run by and for Gables area high school students was held last Saturday at the Coral Gables Youth Center. Last Friday, Gables students were treated to an interesting and informative science assembly presented by the Air Force Missile Testing Center. A representative from the Cape Canaveral Center showed slides of success and failures in the field of guided missiles and gave an excellent explanation of U. S. missile projects. Clubs Plan Christmas Parties The German Club's annual Christmas party will be held tonight at the home of Mrs. Kathe Wilson, sponsor and German teacher at Gables High. Alumni are invited, and a pleasant evening of singing, games, reunions and refreshments is planned. The Coral Gables Literary Society is holding its first annual Christmas party on the evening of Dec. 26, at the home of Leonard C. Tashman. Miss Karlene Pettengill, Gables English teacher and Literary Club sponsor, and Mr. Gilbert Johnson, also a Gables English instructor, are soon to be wed. Coach Robert McCobe of the basketball squad recently gave his varsity squad a luncheon in honor of his forthcoming marriage. Gables cheerleaders and varsity basketball players are planning a party for him and his fiancee some time in the near future.

Ken Conrad Wins Top 4-H Club Award

By EUNICE TALL Ken Conrad, 4-H Club member at Palmetto High School, recently won the top poultry award in the state. He also represented Florida as a delegate to the 4-H Congress in Chicago, Nov. 27. Ken, who is interested in agriculture, has won over 350 ribbons at the Dade County Youth Fairs and State Fairs with his prize poultry. He was a member of the 1958 Florida State Champion Poultry Team which placed first in production judging in the nation at Chicago. Ken also won the Dade County Poultry Award for 1958 and 1959. When he is graduated this spring, Ken plans to attend the University of Florida to study agricultural or aeronautical engineering. Chistmas Concert The Palmetto Band presented a Christmas concert last Friday evening in the school auditorium. The orchestra, Junior High School Band and Senior High School Band entertained from 6 to 9 p.m. with traditional Christmas tunes and music. To highlight the music the Palmetto majorettes, known as the Pantherettes, twirled. Winter Wonderland Last night, approximately 350 girls and their escorts attended the Second Annual Winter Wonderland Christmas Dance at the Miami Beach Deauville Hotel. Girls' Council of Palmetto sponsored the dance. The couples danced from 9 to 12 to the music of the Gene Roy Band.
