Dancing Jack Stanly Is Teachers' Teacher

Greater Miami will, within a short time, rival New York City and Hollywood as a theatrical and art center. So believes Jack Stanly, one of Coral Gables' and New York's most successful dance instructors. Often referred to as "the teacher's teacher," Stanly now makes his headquarters, formerly in New York City, in Coral Gables. His studio at 179 Giralda serves as a starting point for many dancing hopefuls on the way to stardom. The New York School operates only during summer months. Colonel Stanly Stanly, or "Colonel Stanly" as he is sometimes known, is a native of Louisville, Ky. In 1954 he was commissioned by former Gov. Lawrence Wetherby as a Kentucky Colonel, a recognition for "a native son's outstanding contributions to the performing arts." His career began at 16 when he went to New York and studied under numerous instructors. As a featured dancer with various stars and their shows, he traveled across both American continents. He was the youngest featured performer of the Ziegfield Follies of 1928. Further contacts led him to association with such bands as Rudy Vallee and Paul Whiteman. Whiteman, in an introduction of a Jack Stanly group on TV said, "When you want silver, look for sterling. When you want dancing, look for Jack Stanly." Still Creating Stanly, originator of the technique exercises now used for basic tap, is still creating. In seeing Miami placed on a level with New York and Hollywood, he plans to contribute his own talent and ideas. Plans for a civic dance group known as The Performing Arts Group of Coral Gables have been outlined. The purpose of the group is to perform for civic and charitable organizations and give assistance to local students interested in a career as a performing artist or teacher. Through this purpose interest in all forms of the dance will be stimulated. The group has already made a good start. Their first appearance was before the Jewish War Veterans at a dinner at the Candlelight Inn. Featured in the group were Ron Daniels, Ronnie Reynolds, Muffet Elmore, Steffi Fox, and Robert Conine, all students at the Coral Gables studio. Full Schedule Stanly, who owns a home on San Marco Isle, has a full schedule before him. He will appear as the featured guest teacher at the Christmas week convention sponsored by the Dance Masters of America in New York City. After the New Year, he will conduct sponsored one-day teacher and student sessions for dance organizations and private groups in New Orleans, Houston, Tulsa, Denver, Chicago, Jacksonville and St. Petersburg. After tryouts for the parts, the following junior actors and actresses, who have been in rehearsal for several weeks under the supervision of Ester Brezo, director of the JRT, make up the cast. Michael Fogerty will be "Hansel", and Sharon Sanders is "Gretel," (with alternate Susanne Carter). Tony Murphy will play the part of the wicked old "Witch." Dona Evans is the "Stepmother," and Howard Rosenfield is "Father." The first performance will take place Dec. 23 at 2:30 p.m. Other matinees will be Dec. 27, 28, 29, 30 and 31. First meeting of the newly formed Junior Repertory Theatre was held Nov. 23, in the studio home of Mr. and Mrs. Upton Ewing. The new organization is non profit. 'African Queen' Is Neglected

Coral Gables' lengthy efforts to obtain a new police boat were thwarted again Tuesday when the Commission received only one bid and decided to turn it down. A half dozen firms had been contacted to submit bids, but only one could meet the specifications as written by the city. The one and only bid came from Fisherman's Paradise for $2182 on a 19-foot, 75 horsepower outboard type boat and trailer. The new boat will replace the "African Queen" which will be relegated to bridge maintenance duty in the Coral Gables Waterway.

Library Adds Civil War Book

"The Confederate Soldier in the Civil War," recently added to the Reference Department of the Coral Gables Public Library, is an exact facsimile of a rare pictorial history first published in 1895. It has been republished in honor of the approaching centennial. Campaigns, sea and land battles, sieges and skirmishes are all here, vividly described in the words of active participants. There are literally thousands of pictures — battle scenes, forts, ships, people and places — including photographs and sketches of actual battles made during the war itself.
