Brownie Troop Brings Yule Cheer To Orphans

What's it like to be an orphan at Christmas? Not much fun. No dad and no mother. Probably no gifts. But this Christmas will be a memorable one for the orphans at St. Joseph's Villa, than to 34 girls in Brownie Troop 226, South Miami. The Brownies made and delivered last Monday tops for the orphans to help cut the chill of a lonely Christmas. There were jacks and rubber balls . . . other toys brightly colored and Christmas cards cut and colored by the Brownies. And so the Brownies were busy last week in their club-house at 6609 SW 60th St. Working in four groups, each busy with a different type of endeavor, hands worked like windmills. "They're thrilled," pointed out Brownie leader Mrs. Anthony Bonomo. "And this is what they wanted to do. "They were asked if they wanted to make something for their parents, their friends or someone who didn't have much." Martha Howard and Marilyn Frazier were busy as Mrs. Bonomo spoke. They were making toys, too. And Karen Melching, a blonde, blue-eyed Brownie let a serious look come across her young face. "The orphans weren't too happy about losing their mother and father," she explained. "And so we decided to cheer them up." GIVING A GIFT IS GENEROSITY at its best, especially when a child makes the gift with her own hands and then presents it to an orphan at Christmas. That's what is unfolding here. These Brownies are making tiny leather purses for children at a local orphanage. Showing the Brownies how it's done is, right, Mrs. Juan Homs, 755 Blue Rd. Holding up a leather thong and asking for assistance is, left, Brownie Wendy Ross, 11131 SW 70th Ave. WHAT'S LONELINESS LIKE? It's not very pleasant when you have to spend your young years in an orphanage. Knowing this, Brownie Angela Limmiatis, 1102 Sevilla Ave., goes busily about the task of making a leather purse for some little girl who will not share Christmas with a mother or father.
