Gables High Notes Seven Seniors Get Ready For Top Scholarship Test In March

By LESLIE GROSS Seven Coral Gables seniors have qualified to take the GAT test on March 11. These students' scores on the PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test) enabled them to reach the finals of this exam, the winners of which across the country receive scholarships from the National Honor Society. The students who will soon take a crack at the scholarships are: Sandra Burt, John Curtis, Leslie Gross, Maxine Master, Randy Feigenbaum, Eloise Melson and Bill Zame. Band Wins National Honor The Coral Gables High School "Band of Distinction" has been recognized by The Instrumentalist, a national music-world publication, as one of the top four high school bands in the country. Last Friday, Gables students were treated to one of the year's best and most entertaining assemblies. Two newspapermen presented a program on the Civil War. Norman Shavin and Mike Edwards gave a talk and showed slides on "current events" 100 years ago, namely the War Between the States. Bruce Fischer, president of National Athletic Scholarship Society, recently tapped the honorary's new additions. The boys are Jeff Benson, Tim Herrel, Terry Moran, Bill Patton, Barry Boyerm, Steve Clifford, Joel Goldman, Dave Lawrence, John Noppenberg, Tim Doyle, Gil Forbes, Bill Kotys, Pat Munro, Larry Blume, Mark Kastle, John Douglas, Rob Hasencamp and Brian McComb. The new JCL (Junior Classical League) officers for the second semester are: president, Bob Eckert; first vice president, David Leonard; second vice president, Katie Kamp; treasurer, Jack Catlin; recording secretary, Charles Nichols; corresponding secretary, Lois Weil. Science, Math Honorary New SMHS (Science and Mathematics Honor Society) officers are: president, Bob Eckert; vice president, David Richman; secretary, Maxine Master, and treasurer, Michael Hawkins. Two Coral Gables alumni are now on their way to honors on the Yale University swimming team. Tracy Tumlin, who is a senior member of the Yale Varsity, was an All-American swimmer when he attended Gables High. James H. Meirs, a sophomore at Yale, is also a member of the Varsity there. Quill and Scroll, international journalism honor society, held its installation of new Gables High members last Monday, under the leadership of sponsor Mrs. Chris Steers and president Pat Glecihauf.
