Dateline: Southwest High / Senior Superlatives Are Tapped At Assembly

By LAURA HENRY. Excitement filled the air during the Southwest High School senior assembly Jan. 10. There were whispers, laughs, and a few tears of joy as the 1961 Senior Superlatives were announced. The ceremonies were opened by Wayne Wever, senior class president, and then Betty Burris, Aquila senior editor, announced the superlatives to the anxious class. Miss Cecile Roussell, senior class sponsor, and Mrs. Betty Wade, Aquila sponsor, pinned the purple and white ribbons on the outstanding seniors. The superlatives are Mr. and Miss Talent—Bill Griffith and Judy Woosley; Most Dependable — Bob Barber and Joyce Killian; Mr. and Miss Fashion—Al Mair and Linda Elliott; Mr. and Miss Success-Bound—James Gray and Bea Weaver. Mr. and Miss Good Looking —John Gerheim and Sharon Robinson; Mr. and Miss Personality — Jerry Holland and Stevie Jo Harmon; Mr. and Miss Athlete — Mike Waxman and Anita Sneed; and last but not least — Mr. and Miss Southwest —Gary Kovach and Marilyn Johnson. The Chemistry Club at Southwest, under the direction of Mr. Stanley Loupus, recently elected officers. They are Ephraim Newmark, president; Charles L. Cook, vice president; Linda Dunn, secretary; Zalmon Newmark, treasurer. This all-girl club, sponsored by Mr. Edward Garvin, meets every Saturday at the South Miami Stables. They are presently learning the art of horseback riding. During their last meeting, they were taught the emergency dismount. Progress has been made on the Alfred Taylor Memorial Patio which is to be erected in the area near the auditorium. The center will have tables and benches bought with money collected for the memorial honoring the former teacher. Among the students building the patio are Don Barber, Al Kynes, Jim Cable, Florian Stollfi, John Gerheim, Humphrey Greer, Wayne Wever, Don Hughes and Russel Bizette, who drew plans for the patio. Science minded Southwest students will have an opportunity to display their knowledge in a school science fair Feb. 16. The winning projects of the school fair will be sent on to the South Florida Science Fair in March. There are 12 categories in which senior high scientists may enter. They are Chemistry and Nuclear Physics, Geology, Weather and Conservation, Electronics, Physics, other than nuclear, engineering, other than electrical, zoology (man), Behavior Studies, animal—other than man, Zoology, (vertebrates other than man), Botany, Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics. Helen Hancocke, a sophomore, has been named 'teen chairman for the Dade County March of Dimes. Helen has had much experience in organization. While attending West Miami Junior High, Helen was president of the Student Council, treasurer of Debs Service Club, a member of the Girls' Athletic Association, and captain of the Varsity Cheerleaders. She was also a winner in the school science fair and received the American Legion school award.
