Who Said Women Can't Keep Secret?
The Coral Gables Woman's Club will be the setting at 10:30 a.m. Saturday for a coffee commemorating the founding of the PEO sisterhood. PEO is an educational, philanthropic and social organization. There are 10 chapters in Miami, 83 in Florida. What the letters PEO stand for, the 139,000 members will not reveal. Yet they are proud of their accomplishments and want the reading public to know about them. 92nd Birthday The event Saturday will mark the 92nd birthday of the organization founded in 1869 at Iowa Wesleyan College, Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. They announce also that they are the largest women's organization in the world. It also has a long time project, the PEO Educational fund, which since 1927 has assisted a total of 13,000 young women to gain college educations. This year, 54 girls from 18 separate foreign countries are studying in the United States or Canada on PEO International Peace Scholarships. To date, 463 foreign girls have received educational aid. The PEO Sisterhood has owned and operated the Cottey Junior College (for women) at Nevada, Mo., since 1927. An Invitation Here is an invitation by an organization of women who refuse to tell who they really are: "All unaffiliated and visiting PEO's are invited to attend the coffee Saturday as guests of the reciprocity committee. What a chance a daring woman could take in order to find out the real meaning of the letters-PEO. But it would never work, she would be stopped cold at the door probably, since she couldn't give the pass word. How can 139,000 women keep that secret?
