New Area Church Building Has Its Roots In Past
By RAYMOND LANG A long, gravel path twists from the road to the front door of the white, two story building. Weeds battle the grass. And bushes huddled close to the building scrape against its windows. A cross, secure on the building's roof, stands firm against the wind. And also firm are the 70 persons who attend Sunday services in this building, now known as Christ Congregational Church. The building, only used as a church the past few years, has a varied past. Was Sanatarium "It had been built originally as a sanatarium and it had very narrow windows," said the Rev. T. N. Tiemeyer of the building at 149th St. and SW 67th Ave. But he pointed to the new windows, made possible by members who had knocked away parts of the walls to make room for bigger windows. "It had also been used by rum runners from Cuba," he went on. "There was a little cove out there and they used to put their boats there," he said, as he pointed to the near-by bay. "Then, when it was purchased, it was supposed to be vacant. But some woman settled here. "She and her dog lived here without the benefit of modern-day conveniences... such as plumbing. And the place was full of whisky bottles. Like Football Player Reverend Tiemeyer, who looks like a professional football player with his 6 feet, 2 inch height and weight that tips the scales at more than 200 pounds, sat in the tiny congregation room as he spoke. Often, with pride filling his eyes, he would gaze out a window on to the grounds of his church. He was proud of what he and his congregation had done here. But proud as he was, the dynamic minister whose initials spell out TNT, found a few moments to jest. "We don't wander too far back there," he said, pointing to the backyard. "We don't know what's back there," he added frankly. "And besides, we don't want to disturb the snakes." But one thing is sure. No wall of difficulties is too high for the congregation and its determined leader to hurdle ... if it brings God's word into a wilderness.
THE BIRTH OF A CHURCH is not always an easy task, especially when the individual members of the congregation have to bend their backs in labor and toil with their hands to start it. That is just what members had to do to establish Christ Congregational Church, a building with a past nestled among acres of trees and shrubbery.
Bryan Memorial Plans Dedication
Preparation is now underway for a Day of Dedication at Bryan Memorial Methodist Church, 3713 Main Hwy., Coconut Grove. On Sunday, Jan. 29, at the 11 a.m. church service, there will be a dedication of the new communion rail, the new pews and the new reredos. Bishop and Mrs. James W. Henley and Dr. and Mrs. P. M. Boyd, district superintendent of the Miami District, will be present. Bishop Henley will preach at the 11 o'clock service and will lead in the Dedication. Architects' drawings for the pews, communion rail, and the reredos were made by Roy W. Spence Jr., a member of the church. Installation is under the direction of the Board of Trustees, Arthur K. Parker, chairman.
WITH THESE HANDS, the Rev. T. N. Tiemeyer has, with his congregation, carved out a church. On week days at Christ Congregational Church he performs the menial task of a janitor, using these hands to sweep away debris and plain old dust. On Sundays, these hands again go into action. Clasped in prayer, they reveal the fervent hopes of the minister that he can clear away the mental cobwebs, if any, and the everyday problems of his congregation.

Granada Presbyterian Church's main sanctuary, now under construction at 929 Bird Rd. and University Dr., is expected to be completed early this summer, the Rev. Frank A. Mathes said this week. Other facilities are planned for future construction. New buildings will house the church library, classrooms and parlor. Session rooms for the Boy and Girl Scout meetings, which now meet in the old building, will also be included. The church was organized in 1947 with 36 members. There are over 900 members now.
