Eight Children Injured When School Bus Flips
A Volkswagen school bus laden with 14 children from the Temple Judea nursery tipped over early Friday afternoon injuring eight children, one seriously, and the driver. The 15 occupants of the vehicle were thrown into a heap on the side of the overturned vehicle atop broken glass, but fortunately the vehicle did not catch fire when it flipped at the intersection of Ponce de Leon Blvd. and University Dr. Broken Collar Bone Most seriously injured was Lynn Miller, 4, of 235 Candia, who suffered a broken collar bone and head and neck injuries. She was released from Doctors' Hospital Saturday. Also injured, mostly head cuts or lacerations, were Robert, 5, and Johnny Long, 3, of 410 Peruggia; Terry Goldberg, 5, of 511 Savona; Steve Gotlieb, 4, 6060 SW 63rd St.; Robert Wolen-ski, 4, 5000 SW 64th Ave.; Suzan Katz, 5, 5850 SW 13th St.; and Alan Berkow, 3, of 6061 SW 63rd Ct. The bus driver, Selma Kraun Aroniss, 42, of 5841 SW 13th St., appeared to be all right at the scene after the accident, but late went into a state of shock and was also treated at Doctors' for a back injury. She was southbound on Ponce de Leon Blvd., she said, when an unidentified car suddenly cut in front of the bus. Cut Wheels In an effort to avoid hitting the car, "a white or light colored" vehicle, she cut the vehicle's wheel sharply to the right. The bus flipped over, striking a parked car owned by Maurice Tessier, whose address police listed as 3500 Ponce de Leon Blvd. Witnesses reported seeing the runaway car, but could not give a positive description to police. Hundreds of firemen, policemen, newsmen and spectators gathered quickly at the scene. The small bus sustained an estimated $400 damage and the parked car $100.
Chases Baby, Loses Purse
A purse containing $120 in cash and papers was stolen from Windy's Laundromat, 6021 SW 68th St., Friday afternoon when the owner momentarily left the laundry. Joann Collias, 7240 SW 62nd Pl., told South Miami police she laid her purse down near a washing machine. Her baby started to run out of the building. She gave chase. When she returned her purse was gone. So was a man who roared away on a red motorcycle.
Salzedo Widening Proposed By Searle
A study of Salzedo north of Alcazar, with an eye toward widening to its full width was proposed by Commissioner Robert Searle recently. Searle indicated that the heavily traveled street's parkways are filled with parked cars, creating an undesirable situation which would be helped by paving. City Manager L. W. Robinson Jr. is to look into Searle's proposal. Thirty-three per cent of the nation's green peppers are grown in Florida.
In South Miami 400 Turn Out To Hear Master Plan Debate
Orderly confusion reigned at South Miami City Hall Tuesday night. It was a meeting called by South Miami Council to present, explain and discuss with South Miamians a master plan for the city's future. There was a traffic jam in the city hall parking lot, at least 400 citizens sitting or standing in the Council's chambers and a Council which didn't know the best way to present the plan. Conclusions Reached The meeting lasted for about 90 minutes. These conclusions were generally reached: 1. Those South Miamians who have read the plan think it is a good one. 2. More time and a better system is needed to present the plan. 3. South Miami, armed with the only complete master plan in the county, will forge ahead with or without Metro's help. Most citizens left the meeting with some idea of a master plan but little knowledge of how or when the plan will be implemented. Some county residents attended, ready to protest if the city even suggested the annexation of county areas. But they were in the minority. Theory Discounted Mayor Pul U. Tevis discounted the annexation theory pointing out that any immediate annexation would be for the sole purpose of squaring off the city's boundaries. Scott Bagby, author of the plan, was not at the meeting. The job of presenting the plan fell to the Council and City Building Inspector J. L. Greene. Councilman Wallace Rinz explained better than anyone the purpose of the plan. He described the plan as a guidepost for Councils present and future to use in charting the course of the city. "Nothing will change overnight," Councilman Rinz said. "Few sections will be affected values, bring more business to the city and check other areas from losing values." What Plan Includes The plan includes sections on zoning, planning, annexation, land use, traffic patterns, a better tax structure, schools and public parks and their location and business and industrial redevelopment. About half of the city's supply of 500 master plan books was handed out during the meeting. This was the first that many had seen of the plan. All members of the Council spoke on what he or she thought of the plan and how it could help the city. In addition, some 10 spectators asked questions about the plan or gave opinions in an effort to aid others in the audience. Ed Holly, 6300 SW 62nd Pl., said he had read the plan and felt that overall it was a good one. "But it is very obvious," Holly said, "that the author was speaking mainly to the Council and the city's Zoning and Planning Board and not to the residents. This plan is for the Council to be implemented and not the citizens." But the reason for the meeting is that the residents must vote on the plan at a referendum. Other meetings will be called before the referendum.
