City Tightens Belts For Safety

Coral Gables is "tightening its belt" in a move designed to limit future injuries to city drivers. Nineteen police cars and three Fire Department vehicles are being equipped with safety seat belts recommended by the National Safety Council. Installation of the belts is part of a safety program developed by the city, Personnel Director Robert Harrison said Tuesday. Other vehicles will be equipped later. The city is also installing oversized rear view mirrors on both sides of 68 of its trucks, it was revealed.

Frightened ostriches may lie flat, but they never bury their heads in the sand, the National Geographic Magazine says. Instead, they sometimes meet trouble head on with a powerful forward kick. Their feet are armed with sharp three-inch toenails.
