by helen reynolds society editor There is an old saying that your given name is bestowed upon you by living parents, but you can pick your nickname. When Rudyard Kipling Bell's father, the late Judge Bell, named his son after the great novelist whom he had met in New York, and greatly admired, R. K. Bell, his son, wasn't too pleased. With his wife, the former Emilie Alicia Smathers and Southern born, the R. K. Bells reside at 500 Perugia. However, Emilie says that in the bosom of his family R. K. is known and called "Ruddy" and likes it. The Bells' have one son, Robert Lee, 12, who now attends Admiral Farragut School in St. Petersburg. Emilie probably had a hand in naming their son, since she is a true daughter and member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. * * * * * Mrs. M. B. Mrs. Robert Grant won the oil painting (by Mrs. Bennett) as winner. Mrs. Henry Krystow was second, and a tie for third was the luck of Mrs. Alva V. Marsh and Mrs. J. B. MacMurray.
