Classics, Jazz Head The Bill At Junior High
Both classical music and jazz will head the entertainment bill when the concert band and orchestra at South Miami Junior High School presents its fifth annual musical program at 8 p. m. Jan. 28, in the auditorium. Admission is 50 cents for students and $1 for adults with proceeds going toward the school's music fund to finance operation of the music department. Manhattan Vignettes A musical highlight of the night will be "Manhattan Vignes", a selection of music embodying the spirit and atmosphere of such spots in New York as The Cloister, an old monastery, and Central Park. The 70-piece band and the 45-member orchestra, plus a violin quartet and brass ensemble, will headline the show. Violin Quartet The violin quartet are Lyon Lammers, Steve Kelley, Mike Kramer and Ruth Stern, whose father, Victor Stern, is in the University of Miami Symphony Orchestra. Making up the brass ensemble will be Jack Maleckson, Julian Brown, Steve Scherer and Reginald Dunnick. The musical program is under the auspices of Herbert Blinn, director of the music department.
Gables High Note Musicians Win Top Honors At Clinic In Tampa
By LESLIE GROSS The Florida Music Educators Association, a professional society composed of persons engaged in teaching music in the public schools of the state, recognized the outstanding members of the Coral Gables High School Band at the annual Tampa Clinic held Jan. 12-15. This clinic is attended by FMEA members and music educators for the purpose of studying the latest techniques in music education demonstrated by outstanding students and "clinicians" and of exchanging ideas and methods for improving the general level of music education in Florida. Gables High had the largest number of band students selected for all State Bands—a total number of nine. All State Concert Band students ranking in state wide positions are Rochelle Drazier, first chair flute; Peggy Celb, second chair, first flute; Pam Knight, second chair, second oboe; Karen Valentine, second chair, first bassoon; Richard Ginn, second chair, second cornet; Roger Jones, first chair, first tuba. All State Reading Band members are Barbara Mathews, first chair, first flute; Judy Blume, second chair, first flute; Vicki Kapplow, first chair, first oboe. All State Concert Orchestra woodwind members auditioned months in advance. They are Marianne Ankrum, first chair, first flute; Dennis Koger, first chair, second horn. All the groups were on a televised program on Jan. 14. Judy Blume appeared with the reading band, performing the flute solo, (with accompaniment of the band) Concertino by Chaminade, for the band directors present. Richard Ginn and Dennis Koger were auditioned and offered scholarships to Stetson University. Five flute players from Gables all made firsts and competed against each other. Curtis Mosso, who swam on the Gables High Varsity last year, has continued participating in this sport in college. Yale University recently reported on his excellence in swimming with that college's Freshman team. Swimming is one of the 15 intercollegiate sports in which Yale students participate during the year. Mosso, who was a member of National Honor Society while at Gables, was selected as a member of the All-American freestyle relay team last year. Practice for the 1961 edition of the Cavalier baseball team opened Jan. 4, with a flock of new faces trying to win berths on the squad. Returning from last year's State Championship squad are first basemen, Dick Ahlfeld and Bob Brennan, and second sacker Bruce Fischer. Also back for another whirl are catchers Chuck Helm and Vic Dubois, and outfielders Terry Moran and Ken Mascari. Also returning will be pitching aces Pat Procacci and Jerry Dorsch.

Gables To Keep School Guards
The Coral Gables City Commission decided last week to market its school crossing guards—at least until Metro comes through with installation of protective lights. City Manager L. W. Robinson Jr. recommended retention of the guards. "It's just another service to Coral Gables residents," Robinson told the Commission. Most Dade County municipalities have abolished the guards after installation of crosswalk lights. Hialeah recently indicated that they were using both. Robinson is to learn from Metro when they plan to install the lights in the Gables.
