Dateline: Southwest High 'Oklahoma' Is History Making Try For Student Cast Of More Than 100
By LAURA HENRY A history-making first in Dade County is scheduled for Feb. 9-10 when the Southwest High School drama and music departments present "Oklahoma" for the first time by a high school cast. The dramatic musical story, which has been a smash hit all over the country for the past 20 years, will be staged with a cast of over 100 and will cost approximately $1000. Playing the leading roles are: Deborah Romoser as Aunt Elley; Lee Strickland, Curley; Kathy DiMezza, Laurey; Alan Kynes, Will Parker; Wayne Pulsipher, Jud Fry; Janet Sues, Ada Annie Carnes; Fred Abrams, Ali Hakim. The popular song such as "Oh, What a Beautiful Morning" and "Surrey with the Fringe on Top" will be presented by the chorus directed by Mrs. Margaret de Sola, accompanied by the band under the leadership of Mr. Marvin Mockabee. Radio Broadcasts Many students are taping scripts about American authors for presentation over a local radio station during February. This program is carried on by the station in collaboration with the creative writing and 11th grade honors English classes taught by Mrs. Mabel M. Staats. Lincoln's birthday and the centennial of the War Between the States will be commemorated Feb. 12 by Elizabeth Kraemer, Lois Massey, Harry Cook, Althea Crawford, Joe Faix and Kathy Valetta. Two poets, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Oliver Wendell Holmes, will be presented in a series of vignettes by Sharon Campbell, Charles Mirman and Marcia Money. Benjamin Franklin was honored on his birthday Jan. 17 in scripts broadcast by Marybeth Dittemore, Howard Watson, Pat Goff, Anita Klein, William Oswald and Elaine Schafer. George Washington and James Russell Lowell, who share the birthdate Feb. 22, will be presented by Richard Glasser, Ed Radelat, Wendy Stevens, Vincent Beachy, Patricia Daughtery and Joan Rothwell. Poet Presents Series A nationally known poet, Mr. Vincent Godfrey Burns, will present a program for the second time at Southwest on Feb. 10. This year he will give "Poet's Theatre", a series of dramatic readings in colorful costume. Southwest debaters Zalmon Newmark, Bobbie Kotch and Charles Merman entered in three divisions in the senior standard debate held at Miami Beach High. They all finished in the semi-finals. These students had to write and present their speeches which were 8 to 10 minutes in length. In a recent tournament with Coral Gables, Southwest's sharp-shooting archery team coached by Miss A. J. Bassett downed the Gableites with bullseyes, and overwhelmed them by a margin of 452 points. Members of the team are Maggie Plasman, Sandy Green, Dianne Perkins, Mary Chapman, Ann Horman, Pat Kennedy and Donna Roberts. Thespians Tap The nation-wide Thespian Club is adding 10 new members to its honor society. The new pledges are Joyce Hart, Joan Hart, Jean Moore, Thomas Allen, Betty Cue Godwin, Crystal Hill, Cecil Griffin, Cheryl Talcott, Marco Carpenter and Debbie Romoser. Each of them has met the stiff qualifications of participating in one and three act plays, earning 10 or more points by devoting extra hours of work, and by back stage work.
