37 SM students honored by chamber

Thirty-seven outstanding graduates of South Miami High School were recognized Wednesday, May 5, by the South Miami Chamber of Commerce and the City of South Miami. The first South Miami Senior High School Luncheon, a bicentennial event, was held at the Holiday Inn, 1350 S. Dixie Hwy. Jim Barker, district manager for Southern Bell Telephone Company, and a member of the City of South Miami Bicentennial Committee, was master of ceremonies. Dr. Henry King Stanford, president of the University of Miami, was guest speaker. Rev. James G. Wallace, pastor at University Christian Church, gave the invocation. Students honored included the Top 10 in scholastics, Silver Knight winners and Senior Superlatives. They were: Maria Acosta, Senior Superlative "Most Helpful"; Robin Alexander, Silver Knight in English and Literature, and fifth in the Top 10; Barbara Allen, Senior Superlative "Most Artistic"; T.D. Allen, Senior Superlative "Best Personality"; Manny Amario, Senior Superlative "Most Helpful". Also Andy Bernstein, Senior Superlative, "Most Humorous"; Stephanie Browner, Silver Knight General Scholarship, third in the Top 10; Bob Bulnes, Senior Superlative, "Most School Spirit"; Johnny Croker, Most-Valuable Football and Basketball Player, Florida High School Athletic Association All Star Football Southern Teau; Saran Escarra, Senior Superlative "Most Leadership"; Fidel Ferradas, 10th in the Top 10. Also, Kim Fox, Senior Superlative "Most School Spirit"; Mira Graetz, Silver Knight Foreign Language, sixth in the Top 10; Carlos Hazday, Senior Class President; Annie Herman, Senior Superlative "Most Athletic"; Robert Hood, ninth in the Top 10; Lori Horowitz, Silver Knight in Speech, winner of Bicentennial Youth Debates in state! Evy Mack fourth in the Top 10 David McCartney, Senior Superlative "Most Artistic"; Jeff Michelson, Silver Knight Citizenship. Also Nancy Mir, Senior Superlative "Best Looking"; Janet Nesbit, fourth in the Top 10; Sue Pash, Senior Superlative "Best Personality"; Pam Perry, Silver Knight Journalism, Senior Superlative "Most Likely to Succeed"; Loren Plotkin, Silver Knight Social Studies, Senior Superlative "Most Leadership", Student Government President! Anita Rivera, Senior Superlative "Most Musical"; Robert Rubenstein, second in the Top 10, Senior Superlative "Most Intelligent", Merit Scholar; Lloyd Schmitt, 10th in the Top 10, Senior Superlative "Most Likely to Succeed," Merit Finalist. Also, Lisa Shea, Silver Knight Mathematics, third in the Top 10, Merit Scholar, Presidential Scholar Finalist; Lori Shutter, Silver Knight Music; Ann Sintz, Silver Knight Drama; Melinda Uria, Senior Superlative "Most Humorous"; Davison Virgil, Senior Superlative "Best Looking"; Doug Watson, Senior Superlative "Most Athletic"; Mark Westman, Silver-Knight Athletics; Julie Wetzel, Silver Knight Science, first in the Top 10, Senior Superlative "Most Intelligent," Merit Scholar.

Coast Guard offers safe boating class

The Coast Guard Auxiliary is offering a series of safe boating classes which will cover safe sailing, seamanship, first aid and outboard motor safety. Local classes will be held: May 10 to June 14, 7:30 p.m., First United Presbyterian Church of Coral Gables, 121 Alhambra Plaza (854-3252 or 361-5289). May 11 to June 17, 8 p.m., South Miami Junior High School, 6750 SW 60th St. (666-7470 or 576-5752). A home study course is also available through the U.S. Government Printing Office.
