S. Dade firms exhibiting goods at Home Show
Wicker furniture conjures images of Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn sitting on the porch of a jungle lodge sipping whiskey and leaning back in mammoth oval-backed straw thrones. Or at least, it used to. Now, wicker is as natural for Florida living as orange juice, and two Coral Gables businesswomen are capitalizing on the trend to comfortable, cool, natural wicker furniture. Ruth Coleman and Elaine Homestead, who own Rattan and Things at 220 Andalusia, are bringing their innovative wicker designs to the Miami Home Show, which opened at Dinner Key Auditorium May 7 and runs through Wednesday, May 12. And they aren't the only local business owners joining 200 exhibits at the largest home show ever. Coral Gables architect Robert Koger is erecting the first geodesic dome house ever built in South Florida, right inside the auditorium. The three-bedroom, two-bath house joins these other Gables and South Dade exhibits: Haitian baskets, rugs, furniture and accessories from Maurice Man of Coral Gables. Drinking water distillation units from Paul Prinderville's Aquarius Enterprises of Coral Gables. Lawn care slides and lectures from Palmetto Hardware of South Miami. Recreational vehicles, plans for indoor and outdoor gardens, solar heating systems and custom furniture from throughout South Dade. Show hours are 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. weekdays; noon ot 10:30 p.m. Saturday and noon to 9:30 p.m. Sunday. Elaine Homestead, Ruth Coleman of Gables ... will be showing wicker, rattan furniture at show

Their home is functional but most of all, comfortable
From Page 19 only the formal area of the living room. The rest of the long room is covered with brown, wood texture vinyl flooring to ensure waterproof passage. A burled wood dining room table and highboy filled with silver and crystal are at the vinyl-floored end of the room. The dining chairs are covered with the same upholstery as the couch. The living room area is carpeted in a soft yellow shag and the windows are draped in yellow lace that lets in plenty of sunshine from the private back yard. Two white and yellow covered armchairs and one blue armchair surround the sofa and a coffee table, which sports a white porcelain elephant planter and two crystal decanters on a silver tray. An antique brass samovar made into a lamp and several fine porcelain figurines complete the decor. "I wanted the house, first of all, to be comfortable," Ronnie said. After that, she added, the house had to be easily organized and functional. After all, the Bermonts are busy folks. Peter, a stockbroker with Drexel Burnham, is also the out-going president of the Dade County Mental Health Association and a member of the Coral Gables Budget Advisory Board. And Ronnie, with two little children to take up most of her time and attention, also tries to find opportunities to play tennis and participate in charity drives. A former Palmetto Junior High School teacher, she also has worked with the Mental Health Association's "Listen to Children" program and she has plans to do more of the same as soon as Bill is old enough for nursery school. The Bermonts have real roots in Coral Gables. Junior high sweethearts, they attended Coral Gables High School and, after going to separate but near-by colleges in Texas, they came home. "Young people are coming back to Coral Gables," Ronnie said. "We could have more land and a bigger house if we lived farther out, but we both grew up in the Gables. And the convenience of being here far outweighs anything else. This is our home."
